The Story of The University Shuttle Bus or ‘Rod Pop’
A pink shuttle bus running between Chulalongkorn University and places nearby has become a familiar sight to students, passers-by and residents in the vicinity for a very long time. Not only does it facilitate a safe and convenient commute to and from the university, Chulalongkorn shuttle bus service, or so-called “Rod Pop” (a Thai abbreviation for air-conditioned shuttle bus), is friendly to environment and pollution-free.
In 2007, to go in line with the Green University project, Chulalongkorn University opted for electric buses known as Harmony Innovative Bus, or HIB. The Harmony Innovative Bus can run at a maximum speed of 80 kilometers per hour with a capacity of more than 20 seats. Passengers are also guaranteed to enjoy a comfortable ride with cool air temperature.
Chulalongkorn shuttle bus service provides not only a more revolutionary and environment-friendly technology but also changes in new routes to fit the needs of its passengers. Starting on 1st June 2011, more shuttle buses will be added to 20 with four routes starting from Sala Phra Kiew to other stops around the campus and vicinity areas and ending at Faculty of Engineering. Operation time is from Mondays to Saturdays, 0700hr and 1900hr, with bus no. 1 and 2 exclusively on Saturdays. Good news is, instead of paying for a two-baht ticket, it’s now free of charge starting from May 2011.
Passengers at Chulalongkorn University believe that the use of electric buses will help reduce pollution and encourage students and staff to become aware of energy conservation, reduction of personal cars and parking spaces on campus. With these advantages, it is undoubtedly why the popularity of Chulalongkorn shuttle bus, or so-called Rod Pop, never ceases.
