Suan Phueng Ceramic Exhibition to Showcase Thai Craftsmanship at Chulalongkorn Museum
The Office of Art and Culture, Chulalongkorn University, in collaboration with Royal Society of Thailand, Academy of Arts, invites all to the “Suan Phueng Ceramic Exhibition,” to be held from June 27 to July 25, 2025, on the 1st floor of the Chulalongkorn University Museum. The Opening Ceremony will take place on Friday June 27, 2025, at 17.00 hrs.
A collaboration between Chulalongkorn University’s Office of Art and Culture, Royal Society of Thailand, Academy of Arts, and the Support Foundation of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand, the exhibition showcases ceramic works by Support members from Suan Phueng, Ratchaburi Province. The exhibits are part of the Royal Society on the Road project (Academy of Arts) 2025 under the theme of the Development of Silpacheep’s Ceramic Design, Silpacheep’s Members, Suan Phueng, Ratchaburi Province, with the goal to disseminate knowledge to the public. Prof. Sukhumal Sarakasetrin, member of the Royal Society, Academy of Arts, is the project supervisor and prototype developer, building upon the traditional concepts of the group members to enhance the works with distinct colors and to increase their added value.
The ceramic works displayed in the exhibition are crafted by members of the SUPPORT Foundation from Suan Phueng, Ratchaburi Province, using the Sgraffito technique which involves using sharp tools to scrape and scratch lines through colored slip or engobe mixed with stain applied to the vessel surface, creating contrasting colors between the clay body and slip colors. They also use the Mochaware decorative technique to create patterns resembling moss or trees, achieved by dipping the vessel into slip or pouring slip onto the vessel, then using a brush dipped in Mocha tea mixture (a mild acid) and dropping it directly onto the slip to create patterns that spread in circular formations. Additionally, they employ the Marbling technique, which imitates marble patterns by mixing colored stain into clay, kneading it together, then rolling it into sheets and arranging them in alternating colors. The sheets are then cut and layered back and forth or kneaded together, so that when formed into vessels, they display incredible marble-like patterns.
