Thai House, Chulalongkorn University

Preserving and creating value in Thai art and culture.

Thai House Chulalongkorn University

About

The Thai House at Chulalongkorn University was constructed to commemorate the fifth-cycle birthday anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the Royal Coronation Ceremony, and the 70th anniversary of Chulalongkorn University.

Designed to create a traditional Thai cultural atmosphere within the surrounding community, the complex consists of five separate Thai-style houses.

The traditional Thai houses and exhibition areas within the museum

House No.1: The Main House

The Main House, or principal residence, features a Buddha image graciously bestowed by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, along with a bust of a renowned Thai music master. The house also displays traditional Thai musical instruments, including an ancient piphat ensemble and a ranat (Thai xylophone) belonging to Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

House No.2: House, Utensils and Antiques

This exhibition house showcases artifacts and antiques donated by Dr. Vinit and Khunying Pannee Vinitnaipak. Highlights of the collection include Benjarong porcelain, cut glassware, silverware, earthenware, niello ware, royal decorations, antique Thai textiles, Buddha images, and other valuable cultural objects.

House No.3: Thai Wickerwork House

The Thai Wickerwork House presents a collection of woven handicrafts donated to Chulalongkorn University by Associate Professor Saengarun Rattakasikorn and Assistant Professor Lada Rattakasikorn. The exhibition features woven items crafted from natural materials found across Thailand and transformed into traditional household tools and everyday utensils from both past and present. It also highlights the artistic beauty of local craftsmanship through intricate weaving techniques and decorative patterns found in items such as hats, baskets, trays, sticky rice containers, and fish traps.

House No.4: Multipurpose Pavilion on the Water

The Multipurpose Waterside Pavilion showcases a style of Thai architecture known as Songkhrueang Lamyong. This contemporary interpretation of traditional Thai architecture was uniquely designed rather than replicated from earlier structures. The pavilion serves as a venue for a variety of activities, including Thai classical music performances, cultural events, and religious ceremonies.

Building No.5: Guest House and Office

The Guest House and Administrative Office is designed to accommodate university guests and serves as a center for communication, coordination, and administrative activities within the Thai House complex.
