[CNA] "Kids Are Too Expensive!” How Thailand Became One of The World's Fastest Aging Countries

After Singapore, Thailand has the lowest fertility rate in Southeast Asia, making it one of the fastest aging countries in the world. The problem is, Thailand will grow old before it grows rich.

“We are among one of the developing countries experiencing a very rapid transformation. The drop is really, really fast, which actually means that in about one generation – that approximately 60 years- if we continue on this projected path, the population will decrease by half. From 66 million people, it will likely decrease to 33 million,” said Dr. Piyachart Phiromswad, Deputy Director, Sasin Graduate Institute of Business Administration.

While Thailand tries to boost its birth rate, it must also address the problem at the other end. Looking after quickly aging population, Chulalongkorn University Platform for Aging Research Innovation – Chula ARi, is looking for solutions to this problem. “Supporting system start with the community. That’s why we try to strengthen ability of the community to help themselves. That’s way I think that we will survive,” said Prof. Dr. Vipan Prachuabmoh, Director of Chula ARi
