Lecture Invitation: From Speciecide to Ocean Justice

Is the ocean merely a resource, or is it becoming a “victim” of global systems?
The Social Research Institute of Chulalongkorn University, through CUSRI Academy, in collaboration with the Aquatic Resources Research Institute, the Faculty of Law, the Energy Research Institute, and the Sustainable Environment Research Institute at Chulalongkorn University, cordially invites you to attend a public lecture titled “From Speciecide to Ocean Justice: Reframing Marine Governance and Responsibility” (from species destruction to ocean justice: rethinking frameworks of marine governance and responsibility).
The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Emiline Smith, Lecturer in Criminology at the Scottish Centre for Crime & Justice Research and Director of Internationalization for the School of Social & Political Sciences at the University of Glasgow, Scotland.
The event will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Chumphot–Pantip Conference Room, Prajadhipok–Rambhai Barni Building, Chulalongkorn University.
Join us in exploring “another side” of the ocean—not merely as a resource, but as a space interconnected with global systems of harm, from illegal fishing and human trafficking to transboundary pollution. Dr. Emiline Smith invites us to rethink existing frameworks and introduces the concept of “Ocean Justice,” which expands responsibility beyond humans to ecosystems and marine life.
Key topics of the lecture:
- The ocean as a source, transit point, and destination of harm
- Hidden inequalities in the exploitation of marine resources
- The concept of speciecide: the systematic destruction of non-human life
- Transitioning toward fair and sustainable governance
