Chula Exhibition: Experimental Design Intertwined NAGA Serpents at Architect ’69
Chulalongkorn University showcased works by faculty members from the Faculty of Architecture at “Architect’69” (Architect’26), held until May 3, 2026, at Challenger Hall, IMPACT Exhibition and Convention Center, Muang Thong Thani.
One of the highlights was the experimental design “Intertwined NAGA Serpents” by Asst. Prof. Dr. Runda Aduldejcharas of the Department of Interior Architecture, Faculty of Architecture, and Deputy Director of the Metal and Materials Research Institute, Chulalongkorn University. The work was exhibited at booth T50–T51.
This project presents a pavilion design that interprets the “Naga” through a contemporary architectural language, conveying continuity, movement, and belief. It uses a self-structural system of smaller modules to form a structural skin. The design is inspired by natural snake scale patterns and incorporates biomimicry concepts to create a structure that is both visually striking and efficient in load distribution.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Runda Aduldejcharas explained that this work is part of experimental design research focusing on form, structure, and material potential. It uses recycled plywood that has been reprocessed through compression molding to reduce environmental impact, while also testing the material’s capabilities in bending, load-bearing, and structural limits—challenging the boundaries of material performance in design.
A key concept of the work is modular design, using puzzle-like assembly of components that enables a wide variety of forms, including curves and freeform shapes driven by imagination. It also contributes to sustainability knowledge development in terms of materials, environment, and co-learning processes between designers and communities, aiming to pass knowledge on to society and younger generations.
