C2F Empowers Chula to Advance Academic Excellence and Research on the Path to Becoming a World-Class University

The C2F, or Second Century Fund, of Chulalongkorn University supports research that addresses social, environmental, economic, and national policy challenges. In 2025, over 1,000 scholarships will be awarded, with nearly 700 million baht allocated to drive academic advancement and move the university to world-class status.

Examples of funded projects include:

  • Prebiotics that help control blood sugar and lipid levels, offering a potential alternative to drug therapy.
  • Crustacean shell extracts are used to encapsulate astaxanthin, preserving its antioxidant properties for dietary supplements.
  • FAAMAI Digital Arts Hub, adjacent to Chulalongkorn’s Centenary Park, provides facilities for students, researchers, artists, and the public to experiment with digital art and design, promoting cultural and creative economy development.

These are just a few highlights from the more than 3,000 research projects funded by the C2F initiative.

“Chulalongkorn aims to foster and expand the community of researchers in society,” the university emphasized. “We focus on supporting research that addresses social, environmental, and economic challenges, as well as key government policies—advancing Chula toward becoming a world-class university while creating sustainable value for the country.”

For 2025, C2F will allocate over 700 million baht for continued support of top PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and undergraduate and graduate students, amounting to more than 1,000 scholarships.

Prof. Dr. Buncha explained that Chulalongkorn’s primary income is generated from property management, which is reinvested in academic development through initiatives such as C2F.

“In 2013, when the MBK Shopping Center lease expired and a new agreement was signed, Prof. Emeritus Dr. Khunying Suchada Kiranandana, then Chairperson of Chulalongkorn University Council and former President of Chulalongkorn University, proposed that the revenue be used to strengthen Chulalongkorn University’s academic and research foundation. Initially called the Second Century Fund, the initiative was overseen by the university council, with allocations provided to the university president to manage projects in line with strategic goals. Despite several changes in leadership, the vision has remained consistent: to support academic and research excellence.”

Since its launch in 2019, C2F has awarded over 3,300 scholarships, including

  • More than 1,500 for undergraduate and graduate students
  • 600 for high-potential PhD students
  • About 1,200 for postdoctoral researchers (80% in sciences, 20% in social sciences)
  • C2F PhD (High-Potential Doctoral Scholarships): Recipients must publish high-quality research—Tier 1 journals in sciences and Q1 journals in social sciences.
  • High-Potential Postdoctoral Scholarships: Researchers collaborate with faculty to produce Tier 1 and Q1 publications.
  • Top Professor Grants: Funding for distinguished full-time researchers producing impactful academic work.
  • Conducting Research Abroad Scholarships: Support for PhD and postdoctoral awardees to conduct research overseas.
  • Top Down: University-driven projects aligned with strategic priorities.
  • Bottom Up: Faculty-driven initiatives to enhance academic excellence.

Applicants must demonstrate strong research capacity. Faculty applicants are required to have at least one Tier 1 publication within the past three years and no prior scholarship violations. Postdoctoral applicants must also show a record of prior publications and a clean academic history.

Scholarship terms typically span 1 year for postdoctoral researchers, 3 years for PhDs, and 2 years for top professors.

Research outcomes are often published internationally, with some recipients invited to present at global conferences. Acceptance into Tier 1 and Q1 journals is highly competitive, with rejection rates often exceeding 90%.

C2F is budgeted through 2029 (B.E. 2572) and will continue to advance research, teaching, and learning, reinforcing Chulalongkorn University’s path toward world-class university status. Three future strategies include:

  1. Top Talent Development: Expanding PhD, Master’s, Bachelor’s, and Postdoc opportunities to boost research output.
  2. CU Power Grant: Supporting both Bottom Up faculty-driven proposals and Top Down strategic initiatives aligned with national priorities.
  3. SDG-Aligned Projects: Promoting research that addresses social challenges and contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

To date, C2F has significantly strengthened Chulalongkorn’s academic standing while creating sustainable value for society.

Outstanding Research and Projects Supported by C2F

Research title: The Effects of Enterococcus faecium dfa1 Probiotics on the Regulation of Sugar and Fat Levels in Experimental Rats and at the Cellular Level

By: Postdoctoral researcher Dr. Thunnicha Ondee, Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University

The study demonstrated that probiotics can help regulate blood sugar and fat levels. Rats receiving probiotics maintained sugar and fat levels similar to those on a normal diet, suggesting that certain probiotics could be developed as agents for regulating blood sugar and fat and may serve as a safe alternative to lipid-lowering medications in the future.

Research title: Enhancing the Stability and Effectiveness of Astaxanthin through Nanoemulsion Encapsulation with Chitosan

By: Postdoctoral researcher Dr. Patthrare Inthamat, Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University

Astaxanthin, an antioxidant widely used in dietary supplements, is highly sensitive to light, heat, and oxidation. The study developed a chitosan-based encapsulation technology that stabilizes astaxanthin, improving its stability and retaining its antioxidant properties when consumed.

The FAAMAI Digital Arts Hub, supported by C2F, is a creative research initiative of Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts. The hub provides digital art facilities and equipment for students, researchers, artists, and the public, encouraging new explorations that contribute to local communities, traditional wisdom, and social well-being.

FAAMAI currently operates two main facilities: the FAAMAI Dome, beside Chulalongkorn University’s Centenary Park, and the FAAMAI Studio, a space dedicated to digital art and design experimentation.

Chula is the place to discover one’s true individuality and the years I spent here were most enjoyable.
