On December 2, 2024, at the Ampai Sucharitkul Room, Faculty of Education, Chulalongkorn University, the Institute of Thai Studies launched the “Development of Thai Pha Khao Ma Identity” project and unveiled the database for this Thai fabric. This initiative aims to collect, preserve, and disseminate unique pha khao ma patterns from across Thailand in a centralized database, including traditional local designs and newly created patterns. The database is connected to Thailand’s cultural heritage repository, promoting the value of the fabric as an integral part of the nation’s cultural heritage. It also seeks to transform research knowledge into innovative outputs across multiple dimensions. The event was presided over by Professor Dr. Wilert Puriwat, President of Chulalongkorn University.
Professor Dr. Wilert Puriwat highlighted the significance of the Thai pha khao ma as a long-standing cultural legacy integral to the daily lives of Thais of all ages. From household use to the development of diverse products, its simplicity and reliance on natural, local materials make it environmentally sustainable. This aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11 (safeguarding cultural and natural heritage) and SDG 12 (promoting sustainable consumption and production).
The Thai Pha Khao Ma Fabric Database encourages the use of full-length fabrics to reduce material waste and enhance community benefits. The project incorporates the “3Rs” (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) approach to improve environmentally friendly production processes. It aims to introduce Thai plaid fabric to the global stage, connecting it to SDG 8 (sustainable economic growth and decent work). Moreover, it raises awareness among Thais of the cultural and economic value of plaid fabric as a symbol of Thai identity and a source of stable income for communities. With the collaboration of government, private, and academic sectors, this initiative aspires to elevate the fabric as a globally recognized cultural heritage symbol of beauty, sustainability, and national pride.
Associate Professor Ritirong Jiwakanon, Director of the Institute of Thai Studies, described Thai pha khao ma—often referred to as “multipurpose fabric”—as a timeless companion in Thai living. Traditionally used as wraps, blankets, sarongs, or trousers, it reflects the identity of local communities nationwide. Natural dyeing techniques ensure each piece is unique and distinctive.
Today, the preservation of Thai plaid fabric extends beyond safeguarding heritage. It focuses on community sustainability by developing products and increasing economic value. The database documents producer details for each community, bridging producers and buyers directly. Certified by Chulalongkorn University in collaboration with the Department of Cultural Promotion, the database fosters pride among communities and encourages the revival of traditional uses for plaid fabric. This direct support increases community income while avoiding practices that diminish the fabric’s cultural value.
Supporting the use of full-length Thai plaid fabric can help communities sell more fabric and promote the preservation of authentic Thai textiles. Collaboration between the public and private sectors in this project not only conserves local wisdom but also aligns the use of plaid fabric with current and future societal needs. Our goal is to position Thai pha khao ma as a global product that embodies Thai pride,” Associate Professor Ritirong Jiwakanon emphasized.
