The Technological or Digital Innovation of the Year award is one of the prestigious categories presented at the Times Higher Education (THE) Awards Asia, often referred to as the “Oscars of higher education.” This award recognizes outstanding initiatives by Asian universities that harness technology or digital tools to enhance education, research, administration, or community engagement.
In addition, a project from Chulalongkorn University has been shortlisted for the Outstanding Contribution to Environmental Leadership award. The shortlisted entry is titled “National Food Waste Management Campaign of Local Administrative Organization in Thailand, an innovative contribution to Waste-to-Carbon Initiative,” submitted by the Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University.
An innovative contribution to the Waste-to-Carbon Initiative
This project represents a climate policy initiative aimed at supporting Thailand’s national greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets through the development of a household waste separation system under the National Food Waste Management Campaign. The project is officially registered under the Thailand Voluntary Emission Reduction Program (T-VER). It plays a vital role in developing methods for reducing GHG emissions by producing compost from organic waste, emphasizing waste separation at source, which accounts for up to 60% of total waste volume. The initiative has introduced a systematic waste segregation model that lays the foundation for sustainability at the community level. Economically, the project transforms previously valueless waste into carbon credits, generating income for communities and improving people’s quality of life. Both the public and private sectors have supported the initiative, collectively purchasing more than 12,853 tons of carbon credits, resulting in over 2.9 million baht in revenue being returned to local communities.
