On June 14, 2025, Professor Dr. Rungsun Rerknimitr, Assistant to the President for Innovation at Chulalongkorn University and a faculty member of the Department of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University—an expert in gastroenterology—along with fellow faculty members from the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University, presented the “Deep GI Phase 2” project. This cutting-edge AI innovation is the first in the world to be used in the real-time examination of two actual patients for gastric cancer, liver cancer, and bile duct cancer. The demonstration was broadcast live from the Center of Excellence in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, 10th floor of the Bhumisiri Mangkhalanusorn Building, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, to Seoul, South Korea, at the International Digestive Endoscopy Network 2025 (IDEN)—a major international conference with over 1,000 gastroenterology specialists from around the globe in attendance.
The Deep GI Phase 2 project is a collaboration between researchers and faculty from the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Engineering at Chulalongkorn University. It builds upon the first version of Deep GI, which focused on detecting abnormal polyps that may develop into colonic adenomas (precursors to colon cancer). Phase 2 enhances the AI system to identify precancerous and cancerous changes in the gastric and biliary tract mucosa, aiming for early detection and diagnosis.
Earlier, on June 13, 2025, Prof. Dr. Rungsun Rerknimitr also presented the Deep GI innovation at Unicorn Day 2025 at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), where it was honored as a rising international innovation. The project received significant interest for potential international collaboration and further development.
HKUST is ranked 19th in the world according to the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2024, with a strong reputation in innovation and startups. It currently boasts 10 unicorn startups (startups valued over USD 1 billion), with a particular focus on medical innovation
