Chulalongkorn University reaffirms its leadership in sustainability and climate action by hosting the international symposium “Design with Climate: Nature-Based Solutions Symposium”, held from September 27–28, 2025, at the Faculty of Architecture, Chulalongkorn University. This event is a highlight of Bangkok Climate Action Week 2025 (BKKCAW2025), the first regional platform in Asia dedicated to fostering collaboration for sustainable solutions to environmental and climate crises.
The symposium serves as a platform for connecting academics, researchers, architects, landscape architects, urban planners, designers, policymakers, and environmental practitioners from both Thailand and abroad. It facilitates knowledge exchange and the presentation of innovative ideas grounded in Nature-Based Solutions (NbS). Key topics include Sponge Cities, Biophilic Design, Climate Adaptation, Corporate Sustainability, Nature Therapy, and Climate Finance, emphasizing the concept of “Living with Nature” to build healthier, more resilient cities that can adapt to climate change while improving citizens’ quality of life.
Professor Dr. Wilert Puriwat, President of Chulalongkorn University, shared the university’s commitment, stating:
“Sustainability is at the heart of Chulalongkorn University’s mission. Projects such as the Chulalongkorn University Centenary Park and Chula Zero Waste are living classrooms that demonstrate the power of design and innovation in building urban resilience against climate change. We are advancing education, research, and innovation that empower students to turn ideas into action for a sustainable global future.”
Assoc. Prof. Sarayut Supsook, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, added:
“Genuine urban planning must respond to social needs. Nature-based design doesn’t just mitigate risks—it restores ecosystems and creates livable, sustainable cities. Our faculty is proud to be developing research initiatives to address urban heat island effects and support sustainable urban development policies nationwide.”
The symposium is held in conjunction with the 7th International Conference on Rebuilding Place (ICRP2025)—a knowledge exchange forum in architecture and urban planning—featuring academic partnerships across the region, including Syiah Kuala University, Institut Teknologi Sumatera, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universitas Indonesia, and Institut Teknologi Bandung. This reflects Chulalongkorn University’s role as a global knowledge hub in sustainable urban design.
The event features a variety of activities, including keynote lectures, panel discussions, youth capacity-building workshops, and student exhibitions held at the Faculty of Architecture Library. These aim to engage youth and the public in learning and actively contributing to practical climate solutions.
The event is organized by the Center for Urban Design for Sustainability (CUD4S Enterprise), with support from the Chula Research Affairs Office, and in collaboration with key partners including the Faculty of Education, Chulalongkorn University, the Chula Integrated Innovation Institute, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Digital Economy Promotion Agency (Depa), Chula Zero Waste, the Property Management Office of Chulalongkorn University (PMCU), GSG Impact, Mission Earth, Landprocess, Siam Kubota, and MuvMi, under the framework of Bangkok Climate Action Week 2025, organized by Just Transitions Incubator (JUTI).
More than just an academic symposium, this event serves as a “call to action”, inviting participation from all sectors—students, youth, experts, public and private agencies, as well as international organizations—to exchange ideas and collaborate on projects that deliver tangible, positive outcomes for society.
Chulalongkorn University remains committed to advancing education, research, and innovation for sustainability, while continuing to partner with all sectors to build a more equitable and sustainable future for everyone.
