Chula Partners with ASEAN Vinyl Council Association to Drive a More Sustainable PVC Industry

Bangkok, Thailand — On December 16, 2025, the Petroleum and Petrochemical College at Chulalongkorn University, in collaboration with the ASEAN Vinyl Council Association, hosted the International Vinyl Sustainability Forum 2025 at the Mandarin Hotel. Held under the theme “Closing the Loop with Knowledge and Collaboration,” the forum underscored the growing importance of cross-sector partnerships in accelerating sustainability across the PVC value chain.

The event brought together esteemed leaders from academia, industry, and research organizations that play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the petrochemical and materials sectors. Participants included Prof. Dr. Pramoch Rangsunvigit, Dean of the Petroleum and Petrochemical College; Mr.Paisan Lorpongpaiboon, General Manager of the ASEAN Vinyl Council Association; Prof. Dr. Pornchai Jansisyanont, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University; and Prof. Dr. Yuttanant Boonyongmaneerat, Director of the Metallurgy and Materials Research Institute (MMRI). Industry representatives from AGC Vinythai Public Company Limited and SCG Chemicals Public Company Limited also joined the discussions.

A key highlight of the forum was the launch of DentaSustain: Sustainable Dentistry through Waste Management, a pilot initiative supported by Chulalongkorn University through its Second Century Fund (C2F) under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework. The project represents a collaborative effort among the Faculty of Dentistry, the Petroleum and Petrochemical College, MMRI, and the ASEAN Vinyl Council Association. Its aim is to establish a new, circular-economy-based standards for managing dental waste, with plans to expand the model to other dental hospitals nationwide.

Beyond project launches, the forum served as a platform for exchanging insights on critical global and regional developments. Topics included the emerging Global Plastics Treaty, data on recycled PVC volumes in Thailand and Indonesia, and best practices for managing post-use medical devices in hospital settings. These discussions focused on adding value to recycled PVC while strengthening the competitiveness of industry stakeholders.

In his remarks, Prof. Dr. Pramoch Rangsunvigit emphasized the essential role of petrochemical products—particularly PVC— in modern economies and daily life, citing their widespread use in the automotive, construction, and medical sectors. He added that the forum marked an important step toward fostering innovation that promotes resource efficiency, supports material reuse, and contributes to reducing net greenhouse gas emissions. Through continued collaboration, he said, PVC has the potential to evolve into a truly sustainable material with lasting positive environmental impact.

Chula is the place to discover one’s true individuality and the years I spent here were most enjoyable.
