Chula Students Awarded Prestigious 2026 Fulbright Junior Research Scholarships

The Fulbright Program is widely regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious and influential scholarship programs. Internationally recognized as a hallmark of academic excellence, the program has consistently awarded scholarships to students from Chulalongkorn University over the years. 

This year, Mr. Archittapon Nokkeaw, a Ph.D. candidate in the Medical Biochemistry Program, Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, and Dr. Teeanutree Taephatthanasagonl, a graduate student in the Veterinary Biomedical Sciences Program, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University, were selected as recipients of the 2026 Fulbright Junior Research Scholarship (JRS) Program. Archittapon will conduct research at Mayo Clinic in the United States, while Dr. Teeanutree will undertake research at Cornell University. 

Archittapon said he decided to apply for the Fulbright Scholarship, which would allow him to extend his research stay in the United States from six months to a full year while gaining valuable international research experience. He had previously received a scholarship under the Royal Golden Jubilee Ph.D. Program of Thailand’s National Research Council to support the initial six months of his stay. 

“My research focuses on identifying target genes for liver cancer treatment. Liver cancer is one of the leading causes of death in both Thailand and worldwide. By identifying the genes responsible for cancer development, we can move closer to designing more targeted therapies. If a particular gene is overexpressed and contributes to cancer progression, drugs may be developed to inhibit its activity and slow the disease.” 

Even before beginning her doctoral studies, Dr. Teeanutree knew she wanted to pursue a Fulbright scholarship. Conducting research abroad, she said, would allow her to deepen her expertise and gain new knowledge to advance veterinary medicine. 

“My research aims to further develop biomaterials for periodontal tissue regeneration in dogs, with a particular focus on alveolar bone. Through the Fulbright Scholarship, I will investigate how immune cells respond to implanted biomaterials. This provides an initial evaluation of the biomaterials’ safety before clinical application.” 

To prepare for the application process, Archittapon first identified a faculty mentor in the United States and collaborated on a research proposal before submitting his application. He also carefully prepared for the required English proficiency examination and made sure he thoroughly understood every aspect of his research, knowing that interviewers would ask in-depth technical questions. 

Dr. Teeanutree spent nearly two years studying information about the scholarship through the Fulbright website and social media channels. She familiarized herself with the eligibility requirements, required documents, and application timeline. She also prepared for the English language test, coordinated recommendation letters from her advisors, obtained an invitation letter from a professor at Cornell University, and carefully studied the qualities sought in Fulbright scholars so she could effectively connect her research to the scholarship’s objectives during the interview. 

Both doctoral students agreed that confidence in the significance of one’s research and its potential contribution to medicine was the key to a successful interview. Applicants should also clearly explain how they intend to apply the knowledge they gain upon returning to Thailand. 

Archittapon recalled one memorable interview question: “One of the committee members asked me, ‘If you conduct research in the United States, what benefits will the U.S. gain from supporting you?’ It made me pause for a moment, but I was eventually able to organize my thoughts and answer confidently.”  

Dr. Teeanutree added, “Confidence has to come from within. If you lack confidence, interviewers may question whether awarding you the scholarship will truly make a difference. When you genuinely understand your research and believe in its value, you’ll be able to answer every question with confidence and communicate your ideas clearly.”  

Both scholars emphasized that Chulalongkorn University played a crucial role in helping them achieve this milestone. They received outstanding support and guidance from their doctoral advisors, Associate Professor Dr. Chaiyaboot Ariyachet and Assistant Professor Dr. Sirirat Rattanapuchpong. 

According to Archittapon, Chulalongkorn University strongly emphasizes developing researchers who can contribute meaningfully to Thailand’s economy and society. This mission closely aligns with the Fulbright Program’s objective of supporting individuals who will return home to create positive change in their country and professional fields. 

Dr. Teeanutree expressed her gratitude for the university’s continuous support throughout her academic journey. Chulalongkorn provided financial assistance beginning at the undergraduate level, including tuition support and scholarships. The university’s C2F Scholarship enabled her to pursue doctoral studies. Without this support, she noted, she would not have had the opportunity to conduct research in her area of interest or develop into a competitive candidate for an international scholarship like Fulbright. 

The two Fulbright JRS recipients offered the following advice to current Chulalongkorn students: “When you study something you truly enjoy, learning becomes exciting rather than stressful, and that passion ultimately leads to success. Whenever opportunities come your way, don’t hesitate to seize them and have the courage to take action. Even if you don’t achieve your goal completely, the journey itself will teach you valuable lessons and strengthen your problem-solving skills.”
