Chula Engineering Showcases Research, Innovation, and Startups
Prof. Dr. Surakiart Sathirathai, Chairman of the Chulalongkorn University Council, visited the Faculty of Engineering at Chulalongkorn University to learn about the faculty’s strategic direction, academic progress, research activities, and innovation achievements. The visit took place on August 6, 2026, in Room 213, Building 3, Faculty of Engineering. He was welcomed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Witaya Wannasuphoprasit, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, together with the faculty’s executives, academic staff, and personnel.
Overview of Academic, Research, and Innovation Progress
During the visit, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Witaya Wannasuphoprasit welcomed the delegation and presented an overview of the faculty’s operations, covering academic affairs, research, human resource management, and technology.
Additional presentations included:
- Prof. Dr. Sawekchai Tangaramvong, Vice Dean, on academic development.
- Asst. Prof. Dr. Pongpat Patanavanich, Vice Dean, on student affairs.
- Asst. Prof. Dr. Pongsak Suttinon, Head of the Department of Water Resources Engineering, on water-related research initiatives.
Engineering Startups Showcasing Research Commercialization
The visit also highlighted the success of startups established under the Faculty of Engineering that have translated research into practical innovations benefiting society.
- Engine Life Co., Ltd. (Engine Life) presented medical biomaterial innovations, including SilkLife, which transforms Thai silk into advanced biomaterials. Building on traditional Thai knowledge, the technology has been developed into safe, biodegradable hydrogels, transdermal patches, and oral films. The presentation was delivered by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Juthamas Rattanawaraporn, Assistant to the President of Chulalongkorn University and a faculty member in the Biomedical Engineering interdisciplinary program.
- Meticuly Co., Ltd. (Meticuly) showcased medical technology innovations such as custom titanium implants. The presentation was given by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Boonrat Lohwongwatana and Asst. Prof. Dr. Chedtha Puncreobutr, Department of Metallurgical Engineering.
Research and Student Innovation Projects
The visit also featured presentations on the following:
- PEG SHUNT, a glaucoma drainage device for patients with glaucoma, presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Werayut Srituravanich, Department of Mechanical Engineering.
- The Chulalongkorn University High Altitude Research Club (CUHAR), a student-led project in which students design, build, and develop rockets. The team has represented Thailand in international rocket-launch competitions and has won global awards. The project was presented by Dr. Joshua Staubs, lecturer at the International School of Engineering (ISE).
Laboratory Visits
Following the presentations, the Chairman of the University Council and the delegation toured laboratories and viewed innovations developed by Engine Life Co., Ltd. and Meticuly Co., Ltd. at the Engineering Centennial Building.
