Overview

The Master of Arts in Applied Economics (MAAE) is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in economic theory, a comprehensive toolkit for statistical analysis, and a practical understanding of how economics is applied in the real world. Students have a choice to study in one of three applied tracks: International Economics and Finance; Health Economics; or Labor Economics. The program emphasizes the development of data analysis and policy evaluation skills that are in demand in today’s labor market, particularly in business, healthcare, and the public sector.

Data Analysis Skills for Today’s World

The MAAE provides not only a solid foundation in economic thinking, but also tools and for applying economic analysis to real-world problems. As decision-making in the private and public sectors is becoming more data-driven, employers need employees with robust problem-solving and data analysis skills. The MAAE program emphasizes training in real-life applications of a range statistical and evaluation methods.

Solid Economic Foundation Combined with In-depth Knowledge

Students gain a solid foundation in economic thinking and data analysis methods. In addition, students choose one of three study tracks to gain in-depth knowledge. The tracks in International Economics and Finance, Health Economics and Labor Economics prepare students for fulfilling work in the respective fields.

Taught by International Experts in Academia and Industry

The MAAE is an international program taught entirely in English by Chulalongkorn University faculty, experts from industry, and scholars from renowned universities in Thailand and abroad.

Highly Ranked Economics Program

The Faculty of Economics at Chulalongkorn University is the top-ranked economics program in Thailand. Globally, the Faculty has consistently been ranked in the top 201-250 by QS World University Ranking in Economics.

Career Opportunities

  • Students may choose Option 1, focusing on a single subject area to develop deep expertise, or Option 2, designing a personalized study path by combining courses from both subject areas to best match their interests and career goals. Two recommended subject areas are offered:
  • Subject Area # 1 : International Economics and Finance
    This area explores the complexities of global trade, financial markets, and economic policy. It is designed for future decision-makers seeking careers in the public sector, multinational corporations, international financial institutions, and international organizations.
  • Subject Area #2: Human Capital and Social Policy
    This area examines the economic dimensions of human capital, including healthcare, labor markets, family economics, and policy analysis and evaluation. Students develop the analytical and professional skills needed to design impactful solutions and to become leaders in both the public and private sectors.

Admission

qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree – Applicants must hold at least a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited university (preferably in the social sciences). For international degree holders, the degree must be on the Office of Civil Service Commission’s approved list.
  • English proficiency – A good command of written and spoken English are required. Applicants must earn a score of 71 or higher on the TOEFL (IBT), 67 or higher on the CU-TEP, or 5.5 or higher on the IELTS.

Admissions Procedure:

The MAAE program accepts applications for admission from January to May each year.

  • Online application form
  • Official university transcripts (undergraduate and graduate (if applicable))
  • Results of an English Language Proficiency Test (TOEFL, CU-TEP, or IELTS) taken no more than two years before the announcement of eligible applicants.
  • Two professional or academic references submitted directly to the program by email.
  • Work history for applicants who would like to study in Plan B (Individual Study).
  • Non-refundable 800 baht application fee.
