Overview

INDA, the International Program in Design and Architecture, is a four-year, English language program offered by the Faculty of Architecture, Chulalongkorn University. INDA was founded in 2006 to meet a growing demand for English language instruction that would better prepare students for graduate study abroad.

Since its first intake of around 40 students in 2006, INDA has grown rapidly, and now has a cohort of well over 300 students. In 2019, INDA graduated its tenth class and is well on its way to becoming one of the most preeminent design schools in the region.

Like many schools of architecture, INDA has a core curriculum providing essential instruction in design and communication, history and theory, and architectural construction and environmental technology courses. It further complements these with a range of courses designed to instill awareness about the unique characteristics of the region, including Tropical Architecture, Southeast Asian Architecture, Architecture Community Ecology, and Urban Design.

Although architecture is its principal topic of study, INDA aims to show how architecture connects to other disciplines, such as landscape architecture and urban design, and thus how architecture is representative of design disciplines in general. It also aims to instill in students fundamental design skills such as creative and critical problem solving, an awareness of the role of design at a community level, and an ability to cope with the changing demands of the design professions in the 21st century both locally and globally.

WHY this program
at Chula

1

One of Southeast Asia’s Leading Design Schools

In 2013 INDA was awarded accreditation from the Architecture Council of Thailand (ACT).  With a focus on design innovation and experimentation, INDA aims to provide its graduates with a truly international perspective on architecture and design. Students will be taught by instructors from around the world who are at the forefront of architectural thinking and practice — including the United States, China, Japan, Australia, Spain, Sweden, Germany, France, Denmark, Russia, and Thailand.

2

Top-Notch Instructors from around the World

Our instructors are graduates of leading international design schools, including The Architectural Association, Harvard Graduate School of Design, The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Columbia University, Cornell University, University of California Berkeley, New York University, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Melbourne University, and many more. Thus, the faculty bring with them unique perspectives on architectural innovation from around the world.

3

Flexible Course Structure for More Diverse Career Path

With a unique but flexible course structure, INDA students may choose to continue on to graduate studies and become practicing architects or choose to specialize in related architectural disciplines to become historians, theorists, conservationists, building technologists, real estate investors, or facility managers. They may also decide to pursue graduate studies in other design and planning disciplines such as urban design, landscape architecture, industrial design, interior design, design innovation, or explore the business aspect of architecture.

4

International Engagement and Collaboration

To further complement this core curriculum, INDA also provides students with many opportunities for international engagement and collaboration through a series of workshops, traveling studios, design build projects, exchange programs, and tours. Many of these are facilitated by collaborations with international institutions including Parsons School of Design in New York City, Meiji University in Japan, National University of Singapore, Tung Hai University and National Taipei University of Technology in Taiwan, ETH in Zurich, Ecole Nationales d’Architecture Paris Belleville, Ecole Nationales d’Architecture Paris La Villette, and Ecole Nationales d’Architecture de Versailles in France, University of Canberra in Australia, The Oslo School of Architecture and Design in Norway, University of Aalborg in Denmark, et. al.

Career Opportunities

Our alumni are practicing architecture professionally and working in other related design professions around the world.  In 2013 INDA was awarded accreditation from the Architecture Council of Thailand (ACT), so INDA graduates are eligible to take the professional Thai Architecture licensing exam after working in an architecture firm for at least 2 years.  Many of our students also pursue further education at top universities.  Other areas of career paths also include historians, theorists, conservationists, building technologists, real estate investors, or facility managers.  Graduates may also decide to pursue graduate studies in other design and planning disciplines such as urban design, landscape architecture, industrial design, interior design, design innovation, or explore the business aspect of architecture.
