Overview

The Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences and Biotechnology is an International Joint-Degree program, which is a cooperation between the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, and the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, University of Liverpool. Our program aims at producing highly-qualified researchers specializing in biomedical sciences and biotechnology who are skillful in the application of advanced technologies and innovations that meet international standards.  Our focuses on in-depth research will create a new body of knowledge in the fields of biomedical sciences and biotechnology.  

Students can choose to enrol either in Chulalongkorn University or University of Liverpool. They will be provided with access to the electronic systems of both institutions. Every student will be assigned at least two supervisors: at least one from University of Liverpool and one from Chulalongkorn University. Students will spend a minimum of 12 months at each institution. During their period of study, students may undertake the University of Liverpool’s Teaching for Researchers Program, and other suitable courses to develop their learning and teaching skills. In such cases, the students may spend more than 12 months in Liverpool. The joint Ph.D. award will be certified by a single certificate carrying the crests of both partner institutions.

Our program focuses mainly on in-depth research in various areas of biomedical sciences and biotechnology to create a new body of knowledge. Key Research Areas are Back pain, foot, and ankle disorders / Diabetic foot care / Clinical virology / Molecular epidemiology / Epigenetics of cancer and aging / Immunogenetics of autoimmune disease / Lymphatic filariasis / Tropical diseases / Mendelian disorders / Congenital anomalies / Mutation analyses / Molecular and biology of medical viruses / Molecular mechanisms of diseases with genetic susceptibility / Nanomedicine / Nanotechnology / Drug delivery / Neurodegeneration / Glial toxicity / Brain iron / Rabies and other encephalitides / Snake venoms / Tumor angiogenesis / Diabetic endothelial dysfunction / Virus / host factors and outcome of viral infectious diseases etc. We also encourage our students to publish their work in recognized international journals and to present their work at international conferences.

High Employability

Our graduates are skilled and knowledgeable in cutting-edge research which contributes to a new body of knowledge that can be applied to patients care.  Many of our students produce internationally accepted research projects and findings that they received numerous awards bringing great reputation to our Faculty and the university.  They are highly sought after by famous international companies, as well as reputable educational institutions to work as postdoc researchers and/or lecturers.

Career Opportunities

Our graduates can become professors and researchers for both local and international educational and research institutions.  They can work in many faculties including Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Veterinary, Faculty of Medical Technology, Faculty of Nursing, Faculty of Health Science, and other related Public Health fields.

Admission

There are 2 schemes of studies: 

  • For master’s degree graduates; and 
  • For bachelor’s degree graduates.

Qualifications of applicants

Scheme 2.1) For master’s degree graduates:

  • Hold a master’s degree in health sciences, or biological science.  
  • Other qualifications per Chulalongkorn Graduate School’s announcement in each academic year or the approval of the Program Committee.

Scheme 2.2) For bachelor’s degree graduates:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree in medicine, dentistry, veterinary, health sciences,  or biological science with honors.  
  • Other qualifications per Chulalongkorn Graduate School’s announcement in each academic year or the approval of the Program Committee.

The required English language score:

A minimum IELTS score of 6.5 (with no score lower than 5.5 in all bands) or a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 88.
