Overview

Established in 2009, CommDe is an international Bachelor of Fine and Applied Arts (BFA) program in communication design offered by the Faculty of Architecture. The program focuses on the myriad fields of communication — from design for publishing to new media communication, graphic design, illustration, moving images, time-based design, internet-based design, digital design, and emergent and future media.

We produce designers whose work is on par with international standards in terms of attitude, proficiency and ethics. CommDe graduates are highly competent in managing a diverse array of media, technical know-how, while having acute social awareness in building a better community.

1 Learn from World-Class Educator and Design Practitioners

Our teaching team includes full-time professionals and a variety of Thai and foreign lecturers who are world-class educators and design practitioners. They have contributed to the great energy of the CommDe program. Furthermore, we annually invite many visiting scholars, designers, and artists with a variety of expertise to lecture and lead workshops. Students are encouraged to freely exchange ideas in comfortable atmosphere with their lecturers as well as their classmates.

2 Expanded Vision through Fieldtrips and Exchange Programs

Students are encouraged to fully expand their personal vision and all-around knowledge through local and overseas fieldtrips. CommDe also has exchange programs with many international universities. Apart from academic knowledge, experience with the history, culture and language of a foreign land develops students’ interpersonal skills with people of various traditions and religions – a valuable and fundamental skill set to possess. Further, it is a platform for exchange between students of partner institutions. At the same time, students who wish to take a long-term leave for non-partner institutions (outbound – for more than 6 months) are endorsed as well.

3 Creative Process and Practical Skills

We teach communication design through both creative and systematic processes, focusing on two ways of thinking: Divergent and Convergent. The former generates creative ideas by exploring many possible solutions and the latter examines synthesis and singular answers to a problem.

To ensure that our students apply their creativity to practical skills, we hone the development of practical skills via lectures, workshops, demonstrations and one-on-one tutorials. Focusing on practicalities, students will learn to apply their experience to real-life situations. Classes also allow students to discover the importance of self-direction and personal responsibility for outcomes.

4 Research Experiments Outside of Classrooms

An awareness of new conceptualizations and technology underlines all. We don’t limit education to the campus environment as all students are required to do field research and experiment and test their design outcomes.

Career Opportunities

CommDe graduates can pursue myriads of careers in the current media-intensive age. They can work as illustrator, creative technologist, social innovator, typographer, filmmaker, photographer, videographer, motion designer, interaction designer, creative writer, UX/UI designer, exhibition designer, art director, installation artists, sound designer, visual designer, brand manager, web designer, content strategist, entrepreneur, to name a few. Admission

Admission period: November – January.

Applicant qualifications:

All applicants must have completed high schools, or presently are in their final year of high schools (Mathayom 6, grade 12 in the American system or year 13 in the British system), or passed one of the high school equivalent standard tests according to the condition set by Chulalongkorn University (e.g. GED,IGCSE,NCEA) which can process the high school equivalency via website www.hsces.atc.chula.ac.th.

Original Certificate, Transcript or Score Report must be provided for verification.

The admission procedure initially requires standardized test results and a portfolio. The second stage is an interview where you will also take a test in design skills. A big tip for this process is: be prepared to be open-minded, competent, and brave enough to face your creativity.
