Overview

The Bachelor of Arts Program in Economics (EBA) received its charter from Chulalongkorn University Council on February 28th, 2002. Classes began on August 4th, 2002 with 45 students. Since then the EBA has been continuously building its reputation for high-quality teaching and learning in the field of economics. The EBA accepts up to 150 selected applicants into the program per year. As one of the leading international programs in Thailand, it has been able to attract a large number of invited visiting professors from prestigious institutions around the world. Also, the program has successfully forged strong partnerships with many national and international institutions. This has led to many benefits, such as the student exchange programs, which is popular among the students.

The vision of the EBA is to be “an internationally competitive program aimed at creating economists who are highly competent to contribute to society, with ethical and social responsibility”, with three mission statements as follows:
1. To equip students with well-rounded and in-depth knowledge that meets international standards of excellence.
2. To enhance students’ understanding of ethics, social awareness and social responsibility and develop future generations of engaged and responsible citizens and leaders of the country and the world.
3. To emphasize the development of core competencies for life-long learning, such as skills and personal attitudes, and consider it an integral part of high-quality undergraduate education in economics.

The EBA pursues five strategies to achieve its vision and mission:
1. To design a curriculum that responds dynamically to the changing global economy.
2. To attract outstanding foreign and domestic scholars as well as business and government experts to engage with the EBA.
3. To create active learning environments to improve students experience within and beyond the classroom to stimulate critical thinking, problem-solving, life-long learning, social responsibility.
4. To encourage students to apply knowledge to real-world problems and participate in a wide range of academic and non-academic activities, domestically and abroad.
5. To broaden students exposure to diverse cultural experiences through international networks in preparation for further study and future employment.

WHY this program
at Chula

1

First Internationally Certified Economics Program in Thailand

EBA was awarded a four-year AUN-QA (ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance) certification for 2015 until 2019 — making it, not only the first, but so far, only, AUN-QA certified undergraduate program at Chulalongkorn University.  It is also the first international undergraduate economics program in the entire country. The AUN-QA certification signifies that the EBA program adheres to international academic standards.

2

Cutting-Edge Curriculum

EBA is Thailand’s leading and most cutting-edge program in the field of economics. With the vision to be “internationally recognized for outstanding undergraduate education in economics”, its main objective is to produce outstanding undergraduates, who are not only well-equipped with academic expertise in economics, but also with global knowledge and experiences, as well as understanding of ethics, social awareness and social responsibility.  With these skills, our graduates can build their brightest careers while staying engaged and responsible as citizens and leaders of the country and the world. EBA’s curriculum is always relevant, up-to-date and focuses on private sector economics — a field which caters to students’ general interests and career objectives.

3

Top-Notch Instruction

EBA has a strong reputation for providing high quality teaching in the economics field and is popular with students.  Our curriculum combines a strong grounding in economic theory and quantitative methods with practical applications of economic principles to today’s problems. Every course is up to date and relevant.

The program’s teaching methods consist of formal lectures, discussion classes and small seminars, allowing for close attention to each student. The EBA teaching staff consists of economists and experts in the field with long experience in teaching, research and practice in economics. Many international scholars and well-known Economists are invited to teach classes and seminars at the program.  Learning facilities such as computing for undergraduates are currently being enhanced to allow access without boundaries.

4

International Atmosphere and Engagement

EBA accepts students from all over the world, so that ideas and experiences from different countries and regions will be shared. EBA also has a great number of multilateral and bilateral exchange agreements with several leading institutions in the European Union, Asia and is working to increase the number of its partner institutions in other parts of the world.  This extensive international network provides great opportunities for EBA students to study abroad for one or two semesters to enhance their global knowledge and experience.  All students in good standing attend an International Educational Trip overseas to expand knowledge outside classroom as well. Learn more about our Student Exchange Program.

Career Opportunities

EBA students can choose from a variety of different professions and types of company. An EBA student’s abilities in English and analytical thinking opens the door to many career options.  Economics, with its emphasis on logic and finance, means that jobs in consulting and finance are the most chosen professions by EBA students. However, the skills taught in EBA are useful in many kinds of businesses in Thailand and abroad.  Examples of industries in which our graduates work are Banking & Finance, Consulting, Technology & Digital, Consumer Goods, Energy, Health & Beauty, Research & Development, Tourism & Hotel, Education, Entertainment Business, Agriculture & Fisheries, Engineering & Manufacturing, Law Enforcement, Politics, to name a few.
