Overview

The Department of Mining and Petroleum Engineering offers a Ph.D. Program in Georesources and Petroleum Engineering to Thai and foreign students, using English as the language of instruction.

The Ph.D. program is designed for students holding either an M. Eng. or M.Sc. in related disciplines. The program will serve both academic and industrial demands for highly competent engineers who can conduct both scientific and engineering investigations to solve various problems related to mineral and petroleum resources as well as resources recovery and recycling.

The curriculum operates on a semester system, providing an extensive study in georesources and petroleum engineering which emphasizes on technologies and advanced researches in the following three disciplines:

Mining Engineering: a branch of engineering discipline dealing with sustainable raw materials production from the mineral deposits and mineral processing technologies to maximize the value of minerals extracted from the mines. The curriculum also offers mine design and operation.
Resources Recycling Engineering: a branch of engineering discipline connecting sustainable resources management, including materials and metal separation technology and waste management.
Petroleum Engineering: a branch of engineering discipline connecting with the subsurface activities related to the production of hydrocarbons, either crude oil or natural gas.

1 Thailand’s Pioneer in the Fields

Chulalongkorn University was the first university to provide curriculums in Mining Engineering (since 1938) and Petroleum Engineering (since 1984) in Thailand. Until now, there are only four universities that offer the Mining Engineering Program and Chulalongkorn University is the only university that offers Petroleum Engineering Program in Thailand.

2 Diversified Fields of Study to Address Current Issues

Due to various concerns on resource depletion as well as accumulation of end-of-life solid waste, the Mining Engineering curriculum has been diversified since 2000 to an extensive study not only on conventional mining but also on urban mining to resources recovery and recycling to promote resources efficiency for sustainability.

3 Strong Local and International Networks

The Department of Mining and Petroleum Engineering also has close networks and strong collaborations with related government agencies and industries as well as many international institutes. Our students will have opportunities to gain more experience and build technical competence not only in Thailand but also worldwide.

4 Research-Oriented Program, No Class Attendance Needed

Offered for the first time in the first semester of 2020 (August 2020), our Ph.D. Program is a research-oriented program. Students can work on their doctoral dissertation research from anywhere. Moreover, students do not need to attend regular classes at the university, except doctoral seminars which can be remotely conducted on the internet. Therefore, this program is specially designed for those who are working in related disciplines and prefer to study without resigning from their position.

Career Opportunities

Each year, our graduates obtain positions in related government agencies, universities as well as research institutes, consultancy, oil and gas business, mining operations, and resources management section. The job responsibilities are varied depending on the chosen discipline of each student. Job locations can also vary among offshore, onshore, mining areas, urban areas and could be either in Thailand or aboard.

Admission

Applicants must have a Master’s degree in Engineering or Science or related fields that are approved by the Program Committee.
