Overview

The Department of Microbiology was founded as part of the Faculty of Science at Chulalongkorn University in 1975.  Our mission is to educate undergraduate and graduate students, and conduct researches in the area of microbiology.  This includes the application of microbiology in medicine, agriculture, industries, and the environment. In the past two decades, we have continuously been transforming into one of the leading microbiology departments in Thailand and Asia.

Currently, we are located on the 13-20th floor of Maha Vajirunhis Building, Faculty of Science. We are offering an undergraduate program in Microbiology (Thai Program), and Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Microbiology and Microbial Technology (English Program). Most of the department’s full-time faculty hold the highest degree in their fields with diverse areas of research interests. We are conducting cutting edge researches in bacteriology, mycology, applied microbiology, bioremediation, food microbiology, fermentation technology, microbial genetics, environmental microbiology, immunology, and virology.

Thailand’s Oldest and Most Prominent School of Science

Regarded as a school that produces proficient science graduates since 1916, Chulalongkorn’s Faculty of Science, the third-largest faculty of the university, offers graduate and undergraduate education in 14 departments. Since the establishment of the Faculty, over 10,000 students have graduated with Bachelor’s degrees. At present, the number of undergraduate and post-graduate students is more than 2,000 and 800 respectively.

Intensive and Advanced Courses

Microbiologists are making a difference in our lives all around the world. They are, for instance, ensuring our food is safe, treating and preventing diseases, tracking the role of microbes in climate change, combating emerging diseases, and developing green technologies for various bioproducts. Chula’s Doctoral Degree Program in Microbiology and Microbial Technology will give students an opportunity for intensive and advanced study in various microbiology fields while enhancing their critical scientific thinking, data analysis, and scientific communication skills.  They can also take advantage of a wide range of elective courses, all taught in English.

Cutting Edge Research for Future Applications

Cutting edge research on microbiology and future applications will be focusing on the impact of microbiology for a better future to enhance and explore knowledge in microbiology and to keep abreast of scientific and technological advancement in the international arena.  Students will play crucial roles in bringing the solutions for challenges our world is now facing. 

Career Opportunities

With a degree in microbiology, graduates will be able to work as microbiologists in many different places, from universities to government agencies, as well as, private companies.  They will play crucial roles in many different perspectives, including medicine, environmental science, chemical, and food industry, as well as basic research. A job title as a biosafety officer is currently in trend. Moreover, graduates can pursue further degrees in dentistry, pharmacy, or medicine.

Admission

There are 2 study tracks:

  1. Dissertation Only 
    1. For master’s degree holders (Program ID: 3535)
    2. For bachelor’s degree holders (Program ID: 3536)
  2. Coursework and Dissertation 
    1. For master’s degree holders (Program ID: 3537)
    2. For bachelor’s degree holders (Program ID: 3538)

Qualifications of Applicants

For applicants holding a bachelor’s degree (Program ID: 3536, 3538)

  1. Admission requires a bachelor’s degree with first-class honors in microbiology or related fields. 
  2. Applicants must have an English score (TOEFL or IELTS or CU-TEP). The minimum English scores for admission are 45 (CU-TEP), 4 (IELTS), 450 (TOEFL PBT), 133 (TOEFL CBT), and 45 (TOEFL iBT). However, students who are admitted with minimum scores require additional English language coursework.

For applicants holding a master’s degree (Program ID: 3535, 3537)

  1. Admission requires a master’s degree in microbiology or biological science (minimum 3.5 GPA ) with a minimum of 10 credits of microbiology coursework or with a permission to apply from Program Committee. Research experience and good quality of publications are encouraged. 
  2. Applicants must have an English score (TOEFL or IELTS or CU-TEP). The minimum English scores for admission are 45 (CU-TEP), 4 (IELTS), 450 (TOEFL PBT), 133 (TOEFL CBT), or 45 (TOEFL iBT). However, students who are admitted with minimum scores require additional English language coursework.
