Overview

This program was developed and designed especially for pharmacists who are interested in advanced research and development of pharmaceutical and health-related products.  The program allows pharmacists from both the industrial and government sectors to gain knowledge and experiences through modern learning technology, critical thinking and systematic research.  Coursework and dissertation topic can be customised to suit the student’s individual needs with research emphasis on innovative, forefront discovery of new knowledge and cutting-edge technology in the fields of pharmaceutics and industrial pharmacy.  

The program is divided into two study tracks depending on the individual student’s research interests.  Both tracks require a full-time study.

1. Pharmaceutical Engineering Track 

  • This track is appropriate for pharmacists who work in the research and development as well as the production departments of pharmaceutical industries or other related healthcare products, and for staff members who work in academia or research institutes.
  • Learning courses provide competency for industrial pharmacists with emphasis on advanced research experiences.
  • Dissertation can be done in collaboration with pharmaceutical industry with focus on development of new viable technologies based on Quality by Design, innovative research such as solid-state chemistry of pharmaceuticals and excipients.

2. Pharmaceutics Track

  • The program is appropriate for pharmacists who work in the research and development as well as the production departments in the pharmaceutical, cosmeceutical and related healthcare industries.  The program is also suitable for staff members who work in academia or research institutes.
  • Learning courses provide competency for industrial pharmacists with emphasis on advanced research outcomes that can be published or patented internationally.
  • Dissertation can be done in collaboration with pharmaceutical industry and research institutes, both local and abroad, with emphasis on development of innovative and practical product prototypes that are safe and effective such as novel drug, vaccine and biological delivery systems.

Career Opportunities

Regardless of tracks chosen, graduates from the program can work in the following positions:

  • R&D pharmacist in charge of pharmaceutical, cosmeceutical and other health products development
  • Pharmacist who supervises production and quality assurance of pharmaceutical, cosmeceutical and other health products
  • Pharmacist who works as a plant manager/supervisor to oversee operation as well as to streamline the plant’s facilities to the international standards
  • Pharmacist who works in academia and various research institutes

Admission

Applicant’s Qualifications

For those who graduated with M.S. degree

Type 1.1

  1. Graduated with M.S. in related areas such as Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Industrial Engineering, Medical Engineering, Nanoengineering etc. from universities accredited by the Commission of Higher Education (CHE) or by their respective Government.  Regardless of the M.S. degree obtained, the applicant must have the B.S. in Pharmacy as the first degree from an institute accredited by the CHE or the applicant’s respective Government as well as the Pharmacy Council of his/her own country.  The applicant also must complete the M.S. degree no later than two years or must be in the last year of his/her M.S. program. If the applicant finished the M.S. degree longer than two years, he/she must have direct working experiences in pharmaceutical R&D, production or other expertise to ensure the success of his/her doctoral pursuit.
  2. The applicant must have English test results complying with the requirements as set by the Graduate School of Chulalongkorn University 
  3. GPAX from the above M.S. degree must not be less than 3.50 or equivalent, or his/her M.S. thesis was assessed as very good or equivalent, or his/her thesis work has been published in an internationally recognized journal.  
  4. Other qualifications are as annually announced by the Graduate School. 

Note:  Applicant who chooses Type 1.1 (Dissertation only) can immediately start working on his/her dissertation project without coursework registration.  However, he/she is entitled to attend (audit or sit-in) courses that may be beneficial to dissertation under the guidance of his/her major advisor.

Type 2.1

  1. Graduated with M.S. in related areas such as Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Industrial Engineering, Medical Engineering, Nanoengineering etc. from universities accredited by the Commission of Higher Education (CHE) or their respective Government.  Regardless of the M.S. degree obtained, the applicant must have the B.S. in Pharmacy as the first degree from an institute accredited by the CHE or the applicant’s respective Government as well as the Pharmacy Council of his/her own country.
  2. The applicant must have English test results complying with the requirements as set by the Graduate School of Chulalongkorn University.
  3. GPAX from the above M.S. degree must not be less than 3.00 or equivalent. 
  4. Other qualifications are as annually announced by the Graduate School.

For those who graduated with B.S. in Pharmacy degree

Type 1.2

  1. Graduated with B.S. in Pharmacy (with Honors, Distinction, or Magna cum Laude) from an institute accredited by the CHE or the applicant’s respective Government as well as the Pharmacy Council of his/her own country.
  2. The applicant must have English test results complying with the requirements as set by the Graduate School of Chulalongkorn University.
  3. Other qualifications are as annually announced by the Graduate School. 

Type 2.2

  1. Graduated with B.S. in Pharmacy (with GPAX not less than 3.00 or equivalent) from an institute accredited by the CHE or the applicant’s respective Government as well as the Pharmacy Council of his/her own country 
  2. The applicant must have English test results complying with the requirements as set by the Graduate School of Chulalongkorn University.
  3. Other qualifications are as annually announced by the Graduate School.
