Overview
The Thai government attaches great importance to the development of railway as the country’s primary transportation system. Therefore, there is an urgent need for human resources with knowledge and ability to support the expansion of rail transportation, rail infrastructure, and the educational curriculum to produce these professionals to ensure Thailand’s competitiveness at the international level. As a result, the Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University (CU) has collaborated with the Sirindhorn International Thai-German Graduate School of Engineering (TGGS), King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok (KMUTNB), and the Rheinisch-Westfaelische Technische Hochschule (RWTH), Aachen University, Germany to develop the Master Program in Railway Vehicles and Infrastructure Engineering (RVIE).
RVIE is a three-year, multidisciplinary, international program that focuses on the engineering aspects of design and research and development of the complete rail systems including the rail vehicles and rail infrastructure. Two areas of concentrations are offered:
- Railway Vehicles Engineering, and
- Railway Infrastructure Engineering.
The program aims to produce engineers at a master’s degree level, with the knowledge and competencies of the German standards. Our graduates will be able to disseminate modern know-how and technology, possess problem-solving capabilities, as well as develop research and innovation to support the country’s railway industry. They will also be lifelong learners and multidisciplinary team players who can work with people from all walks of life and possess creativity while adjusting well to the everchanging atmosphere of the industry, vis a vis the socioeconomic and political climates, thus becoming valuable human resources for the country’s sustainable development.
RVIE Research Areas:
- Design for Reliability and Maintenance, RAMS
- Railway Vehicle Dynamics and Wheel/Rail-Interactions
- Passenger Safety and Comfort
- Rolling Stock Condition-Monitoring and Maintenance
- Railway Infrastructure Condition Monitoring, Ballast Degradation
- AC and DC Traction Power Supplies
- Energy Management and Power Quality for Railway Systems
- Smart Railway Electrification by Smart Grids

1
Collaboration with World-Leading Institutions
The RWTH, Aachen University of Germany (and more overseas universities in the future), TGGS, KMUTNB, and Chula Engineering are world top institutions in the field of vehicle engineering and railway infrastructure. We also have a cooperative agreement (MoU) with other educational institutions and the private sector both domestically and internationally, such as the members of the Thai-German Railroad Cooperation Project (GTRP) which include Siemens Thailand, Schaeffler (Thailand) Co., Ltd., the German-Thai Chamber of Commerce (GTCC), The German Embassy in Thailand, the Ministry of Transport, etc. We receive academic and research support from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), so qualified students do have opportunities to receive research grants and financial support.
2
Intensive Work-Integrated, Industry-Based Learning
Based on the German model, the program consists of industry-based learning and research for three years. Students will gain their practice and experience through internships and thesis work in the workplace for at least one year. With student-center research and problem-solving assignments approach, students will receive advice, guidance, and assessment from both local and international faculty members as well as industry experts from the private sector following German and international standards. Experts from companies in the GTRP project and other organizations are also invited to give lectures and share their professional experiences and knowledge. Students will also gain knowledge through field trips, seminars, etc.
3
Use of Cutting-Edge Technology and Advanced Industry Research Facilities
Students will get hands-on experience in using modern technology and tools in the workplace to increase efficiency, effectiveness, and learning capacity. With courtesy from operators and research agencies, such as the rail system test room from the Rail Transport System Testing Center (RAD), the National Institute of Science and Technology (TISTR), the Electrical and Electronic Products Testing Center (PTEC), the Vehicle Control Research Laboratory and the Operating Simulation Research Laboratory of the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA).
