Overview
Following the continued success of the Master of Arts in Thai Studies program since 1991, the Department of Thai, Chulalongkorn University, in cooperation with the Thai Studies Center, is offering the Ph.D. Program in Thai Studies. The degree provides students the opportunity to develop an in-depth knowledge of a discipline and thematic subject in Thai Studies under the supervision of recognized experts in the field and to become familiar with current research techniques and methodologies.
The degree consists of six years of supervised doctoral research leading to a dissertation and an oral examination. Topics for research degrees can be in any of the disciplines and fields related to Thai Studies offered at Chulalongkorn University.

Thailand’s only International Post-Grad Program in Thai Studies
The international post-graduate program in Thai Studies, offered by Chulalongkorn’s Thai Studies Center is Thailand’s only program that is conducted in English.

In-Depth Integrated Studies and Research
The program is designed for those who are interested in conducting integrated studies and researches in all aspects of Thai culture and society.

Non-Degree Program
The Thai Center also provides the option of an occasional program in Thai Studies, in which participants take courses according to their interests without obtaining a degree. Participants may take as many courses as they wish. The program provides integrated knowledge for understanding Thai society and culture and the development of the Thai nation.

Required qualifications
- Applicants must possess Master’s Degree in any discipline
- Applicants must have a good command of English
Required Documents
- A completed application form with a photograph (3cm x 4 cm) attached
- A photocopy of both Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree certificate (in English)
- A photocopy of academic transcripts from both Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree (in English)
- A photocopy of ID card (for Thai applicants)
- A photocopy of passport (for foreign applicants)
- A Curriculum Vitae
- Two recommendation letters from the dean, head of department or advisor of the applicants’ institution
- Research Proposal which includes the following components:
- Rationale
- Hypothesis
- Theoretical framework
- Research question
- Research objectives
- Literature review
- Significance of the study
- Bibliography
*Ph.D. proposal: 15-20 pages in length

- Applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit any of the following English Proficiency test result which meets the scholarship’s requirement: CU-TEP (≥67), TOEFL (Paper-based ≥525, Computer-based≥197, Internet-based ≥71) or IELTS (≥5.5)

The deadline is subject to change by the calendar academic year of Chulalongkorn University. Please visit the Graduate Admission website to check all the important dates and information there.
It is important to apply well before the start of the semester in which you want to enroll to allow us time to process your application.
Academic Calendar
The academic calendar is divided into two semesters per year. Courses in Thai Studies are offered in the 1st and the 2nd semester of every academic year.
- First semester: August – December
- Second semester: January – May
- Summer break: May – July
