Overview

The Doctor of Philosophy Program in Civil Engineering (International Program) of the Faculty of Engineering was established in 2000 to demonstrate educational and research commitment to Thailand, the Asia-Pacific region and the global communities.

The Doctor of Philosophy Program in Civil Engineering (International Program) produces graduates in four fields of study:

Construction Engineering and Management (CEM)
Geotechnical Engineering (GE)
Structural Engineering (SE)
Transportation Engineering (TE)

The curriculum is designed to provide students with broad educational and professional perception as well as to enhance their effectiveness as practitioners and researchers in the field of modern civil engineering.

WHY this program at Chula

National/International Recognition

The Ph.D. Program in Civil Engineering at Chulalongkorn University has been recognized nationally and regionally for its strong academic background and excellent research capabilities. The program has continuously strived to enhance its international recognition among worldwide academic and research communities as the top graduate program in Thailand. According to QS World University Rankings, Chulalongkorn University has been continuously placed as Top 200 in the world, in the subject of Civil and Structural Engineering, for several consecutive years.

Fully Equipped Infrastructures / Facilities / Personnel

The Department of Civil Engineering is fully equipped with key infrastructures, basic/advanced laboratories, and testing facilities, and qualified personnel to support a wide range of research in each field of civil engineering. Also, the department has two active centers of excellence and several research units where graduate students can get involved and conduct the research in the area of their interest.

Internationalization and Networking

The internationalization of our Ph.D. Program has been continuously enhanced by strengthening/establishing international networks and collaborations with other renowned institutions in both regional and global levels via various forms including student/faculty exchange programs and research collaborations. Students are encouraged to apply for scholarships to conduct their research aboard for a short time under the supervision of international collaborators.

Career Opportunities

The core mission of our Ph.D. program is to produce qualified personnel fully equipped with research experience well-suited for both engineering professions and academia. Graduates from our Ph.D. Program gain a lot of advantages in job placement in both the public and private sectors. Some of our alumni were appointed as lecturers in leading universities in Thailand and neighboring countries and some of them were offered positions in public organizations and well-known civil engineering firms. The opportunity for postdoctoral fellowships is also available at CU for graduates who possess an excellent research record and would like to strengthen their capabilities and enhance their academic profile.

Admission

New Thai and international students are recruited for both semesters. The application usually takes place from February to May for the first semester and September to October for the second semester. Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must

hold a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or equivalent with a minimum GPA of no less than 3.25 (4.00 system) for Option 3, or hold a master’s degree in civil engineering or equivalent with good academic records for Option 2 and excellence academic records for Option 1;
achieve a minimum score on ONE of the following English proficiency tests: CU-TEP (Chulalongkorn University Test of English Proficiency) – 67; TOEFL (internet-based) – 70; or IELTS (Academic) 5.5; and
have other qualifications as prescribed by the regulations of the Graduate School or deemed eligible for admission by the committee of the program.
