Overview

Our i-SMaT program is an international Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program offered by the Faculty of Science at Chulalongkorn University. The program is developed based on the principle of sustainable development goals (SDGs) and to bridge the gap between abundant natural resources (in Thailand), forefront technology available (in Japan), and industrial issues

This program aims to develop students with a rich sense of humanity, a refined sense of morality, logical thinking, a wide perspective, and social responsibility as a pioneer, a researcher or a specialist in sustainable materials and technology after completing our International Ph.D. Collaborative Program in Sustainable Materials and Technology for Industries between Nagoya University and Chulalongkorn University.

WHY I-SMAT

Strong determination to produce highly-qualified specialists

The ambition of the i-SMaT program is to combine various natural resources in Thailand with cutting edge technologies available in Japan to create innovative solutions for solving industrial problems and current social issues. We hope to generate highly-equipped pioneers and researchers that could utilize their knowledge of sustainable materials and technology. We chose this particular research field because of the world bio-circular green (BCG) economy. We want to shape the next generations with this core knowledge to enable themselves to find their career path in the BCG economy that fits with the Thai national agenda.

International experience

Our i-SMaT program is a 3-year study with at least 1 year of research work in the partnered university to experience conducting research projects in abroad. The students will be supervised by academics from both institutions (Chulalongkorn University, Thailand and Nagoya University, Japan). They will participate in collaborative international research and we encourage students to attend online international seminars related to sustainable materials and technology topics. In addition, they will have a chance to visit related industries in both countries (Thailand and Japan), which helps them to able to visualize real world experiences.

Innovation and Technology

In the 21st century, when technology is developing faster than ever before, we want to position students at the forefront of innovations related to sustainable materials. To develop innovation skills, students are required to participate in special research projects according to their own interests, and they will receive support from their mentors who have access to the latest projects in their field through collaborations with local and international institutes. During their study, the students have to publish two original publications indexed in Web of Science.

Career Opportunities

After graduation, students will receive a Doctor of philosophy degree (Ph.D.), they can pursue jobs (scientists, researchers, engineers) in research and development sectors in the industries related to sustainable materials and technology either at local or international level. They will gain connections to the industries as well as professional experiences during their study.

Abroad Opportunities

Besides the double degree program, students have an opportunity to conduct research or attend academic conferences abroad, funded by the program and the Graduate School.
