FAQs-Updated GENed-23 -Independent, worry-free, encouraging lifelong learning

Q: What are GenEd subjects?

A: GenEd subjects are courses that students may choose to study based on their interests. These subjects will enhance the students’ readiness for work and life, both now and in the future, developing valuable citizens and a sustainable society.

Q: What are the changes made to GenEd subjects in 2023?

There are 3 changes:

  1. Cancellation of 4-category requirement* (for students with IDs starting with 66 onwards). 
  2. New grading system (for students with IDs starting with 66 onwards).
  3. Students’ faculty courses are allowed (for all students).

*The previous 4-category requirement includes: Science-Mathematics / Social Sciences / Humanities / Interdisciplinary.

Q: How is the 4-category requirement cancelled?

A: Students with IDs beginning with 66 onwards may choose to study courses from any category, based on interest. 

Students with IDs before 66 must follow earlier regulations prior to GenEd ’23 .*

*Students must choose one course from each of the following categories: Science-Mathematics / Social Sciences / Humanities / Interdisciplinary.

Q: How will the evaluations (grading) be different?

A: Students with IDs starting with 66 onwards will be evaluated in an S/U system (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory).

Students with IDs before 66 will be evaluated using the letter grades of A B C D F, or as originally specified in the course.

Q: Can students take a GenEd course from their faculty?

A: Yes. From Academic Year 2023 onwards, all undergraduate students can take GenEd courses from their faculty.*

*This is based on the conditions of the faculty and/or the approval of an academic advisor.

Q: If students with IDs starting with 66 study a GenEd course as a free elective, which method of evaluation will be used?

A: Students will be evaluated on an S/U system (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory).

Students with IDs before 66 will be evaluated using the letter grades of A B C D F, or as originally specified in the course.

Q: If students with IDs starting with 66 study a compulsory GenEd from their own faculty, which method of evaluation will be used?

A: If students take a compulsory/ compulsory elective/ elective course from their own faculty, the evaluation will follow the requirements of the program and/or faculty.

Q: Can students take an off-campus course and count it as a GenEd course?

A: Yes! Students can take subjects outside the university as GenEd subjects. Students interested in doing so need to personally contact the General Education Center and follow procedures.
