#BeatPlasticPollution in Thailand Chula Zero Waste to Promote Plastic Waste Reduction

Today, the world is filled with plastic waste, with over 400 million tons of plastic being produced each year, more than half of which are designed for single use and only 10% are recycled. Plastic is one of the world’s deadliest threats, including the threat of microplastics that affect our health without our knowledge. Collaboration from all sectors to take action to solve the plastic waste problem is something that must be taken in a timely manner.
Chulalongkorn University’s Chula Zero Waste, together with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), organized #BeatPlasticPollution in Thailand on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at Ruan Chula Narumit to exchange experiences and propose guidelines to drive policies on reducing single-use plastic waste. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jittisak Thammapornpilas, Vice President for Property and Physical Resources Management, Chulalongkorn University, gave the opening speech emphasizing Chulalongkorn University’s intention to disseminate knowledge about waste management, which has been well received by the Chulalongkorn community and the academic circle, as well as on the international level, along with suggestions on ways to propel plastic waste reduction policies in society. Then, Ms. Marlene Nilsson, Deputy Regional Director of UNEP Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, delivered the welcome remarks and presented crucial research results on plastic waste.

Through the Chula Zero Waste project, the university has instituted policies and plans with various activities to promote the concept of reducing and sorting waste from the source, inspiring the Chulalongkorn community to adapt their lifestyle and be more aware of the environmental impact, as well as expanding the practice to the general public. The ultimate goal is to inspire and incite a society of sustainability.
