The Faculty of Nursing, Chulalongkorn University, recently opened the Center for Health and Well-being Promotion for Older People (CHWPOP) in preparation for a complete aging society, with Prof. Dr Bundhit Eua-arporn, President, and Prof. Emeritus Dr. Pirom Kamolratanakul, Chairman of the Chulalongkorn University Council, present in the opening ceremony on Thursday December 28, 2023, on 10th floor of Borommaratchachonnanisisattaphat Building.
According to Prof. Dr. Ratsiri Thato, Dean of the Faculty of Nursing, the Faculty has a vision to be a leading institution to produce nursing leaders and create knowledge for sustainable change in wellbeing. The Faculty has been steadfast in its mission to create nursing leaders, produce research, and served society with academic services throughout its 56 years of providing education in nursing science at Chulalongkorn University and 35 years as the Faculty of Nursing,
The Dean explained the rationale behind the Center for Health and Well-being Promotion for Older People (CHWPOP) that Thailand became a complete aging society in 2023, with 12,814,788 million citizens over 60 years old, amounting to 20% of all its population. Over half of the said elderly have chronic diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and osteoarthritis, making them more dependent and increasing their need for close and more complex care. With children and grandchildren working outside, most elderlies spend their daytime at home alone, making them vulnerable, prone to falling, and more at risk of developing depression. Thus, a day care is a solution to the needs of society and caters to the work life of urban people who cannot provide around-the-clock care for the elderly.
Assoc. Prof. Capt. Dr. Siriphan Sasat, Director of CHWPOP, explained that the center provides services to promote health and self-sufficiency, and slow down decline, as well as counselling and demonstration of elderly-centered caretaking. The target group is the vulnerable elderly with Myasthenia Gravis, tiredness, loss of strength, slow walking, involuntary weight loss, and decreased daily exercise. The center also offers training for health personnel and elderly caregivers, as well as serving as a research hub on the elderly.
The Center for Health and Well-being Promotion for Older People (CHWPOP), Faculty of Nursing, Chulalongkorn University, opens from Wednesday to Friday, 08:00 – 16:00. For more information, please contact Ms. Nittayata Kleeblamduan, Tel. 0-2218-1346,
