The Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University, in collaboration with the Center of Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS), Indonesia, under the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA), organized the ASEAN Regional Workshop “Mitigation of Microplastic Pollution and Implications for Fisheries and Human Health” on August 7, 2024, at Banyen Sayanhawikasit Meeting Room, 15th floor, Maha Vajirunhis Building, Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University. Prof. Dr. Wilert Puriwat, Acting President of Chulalongkorn University, and H.E. Astrid Emilie Helle, Ambassador of Norway to Thailand, gave opening speeches, followed by reports from Mrs. Sumana Kajonwattanakul, Director of Marine and Coastal Resources Research & Development Institute, Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, Ministry of Natural Resource and Environment, and Dr. Thorjørn Larssen, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA).
The ASEAN Regional Workshop “Mitigation of Microplastic Pollution and Implications for Fisheries and Human Health” featured meetings on various topics, with academic experts serving as speakers. The topics included approaches to preventing microplastic pollution in ASEAN countries, from both international and local perspectives, policies regarding microplastics, and research on the impact of microplastics on human safety.
This meeting marked the beginning of establishing a network of academics and stakeholders in the field of microplastic pollution that affects fisheries and human health in ASEAN countries, with the goal of developing mutual policy proposals to address this issue.
