“The King’s Music Day” began with the generosity of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great, who kindly granted the professors and students of Chulalongkorn University an audience in the pavilion at Amporn Gardens on September 6, 1957. The professors and students came to extend their best wishes to Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Walailak, who was born on July 4, 1957. Later, His Majesty mentioned to Mr. Santhat Tandhanand, head of the student’s western music band at the time, that he would bring his Lai Kram band to perform at the university. This led to the first “King’s Music Day” concert on July 16, 1958.
From 1958 to 1973, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej regularly performed at Chulalongkorn University. Though his growing royal duties eventually prevented him from continuing, Chulalongkorn University now celebrates his legacy by holding King Rama IX’s Music Day every year on September 20. The event honors His Majesty’s passion for music and memorable performances at the university.
