BAScii Students Win Bronze Star at SCG Packaging Speak Out 2024 with their "BRIX" Modular Water Bottle Innovation

First-year students from the BAScii program at Chulalongkorn University’s Institute of Integrated Innovation, the BRIX team, were winners of the Bronze Star Award at the SCG Packaging Speak Out 2024 competition with their innovative “BRIX” modular water bottle. The innovation promotes upcycling, enhances the product’s usability, reduces waste, and supports sustainable development goals (SDGs).

The BRIX team members, who won the Bronze Star Award, include Mr. Paphangkon Lopaepat, Mr. Phawit Tiyawatcharapong, and Ms. Pranpriya Thamprathanakul, with Dr. Warinya Chemnasiri as their faculty advisor.

The “BRIX” innovation is a modular water bottle designed to address the issue of single-use plastics. It features a unique locking system that allows the bottles to be connected in various ways, whether side-by-side or vertically, transforming them into everyday items like furniture, small models, or art installations. This design encourages reuse, reduces waste, and ties into sustainability projects within communities. The materials used in the production are recycled PET, printed with soy-based ink, and labeled with recycled paper to minimize environmental impact. Additionally, the innovation promotes consumer participation in the circular economy concept and supports reducing carbon emissions in society.

The “BRIX” innovation was developed in the prototype manufacturing laboratory (CSII FabLab) at Chulalongkorn University’s Institute of Integrated Innovation, a hub that supports students in creating innovations. The lab provides equipment and tools to help students turn their ideas into real products. The students received guidance from Dr. Warinya Chemnasiri in developing their idea and refining it into a working prototype. They also tested and improved the bottle’s locking and connection system, making it a key feature of the product.

The sense of kinship and warmth found in the Chula community is priceless and a treasure worth keeping.
