The Sustainable Environment Research Institute, Chulalongkorn University, organized a panel discussion involving nine major research institutes under the strategic vision of integrated collaboration among Chulalongkorn University’s core research bodies. The discussion, titled “Zero Carbon Journey: Challenges for Thai Industry in a Carbon-Free Global Context,” took place on May 16, 2025, at the Chula Social Innovation Hub, Visid Prachuabmoh Building. The event highlighted Chulalongkorn University’s leadership in the transition to a low-carbon economy through academic dialogue that can inform national policy. The event was opened by Professor Dr. Wilert Puriwat, President of Chulalongkorn University, and the opening report was delivered by Professor Dr. Pantawat Sampanpanish, Director of the Sustainable Environment Research Institute.
The “Zero Carbon Journey” panel aimed to spark awareness in Thai society about the urgency of reducing carbon emissions in the industrial sector—one of the primary sources of greenhouse gas emissions. The event encouraged the co-creation of practical solutions in terms of policy, technology, and consumer behavior, enabling industry adaptation in a global economy that is moving toward Net Zero. This initiative marks another significant step by Chulalongkorn University in applying academic knowledge to drive sustainable transformation for Thailand’s future.
Professor Dr. Pantawat Sampanpanish explained that this panel discussion was the fifth in the series organized by the Sustainable Environment Research Institute. It served as an academic platform bringing together experienced speakers to exchange views, knowledge, and experiences with participants from various sectors—including environmental entrepreneurs, government agencies, private sector representatives, academia, and interested members of the public. The discussion focused on the challenges faced by the industrial sector in transitioning to a low-carbon economy and how this will contribute to shaping concrete carbon credit reduction policies for both industry and society. The ultimate goal is to propel Thailand toward carbon neutrality by 2050 and Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2065. To achieve this, the industrial sector will need to undergo significant adjustments in areas such as clean energy adoption, carbon footprint management, and the development of green innovations to reduce environmental impact and enhance global competitiveness.
In support of this mission, the Sustainable Environment Research Institute has also established the Climate Risk and Resilience Research Cluster (CRR-RC) and the Carbon Management Services Unit (CMS). These units focus on research and services to help organizations identify and mitigate climate-related risks while enhancing their resilience to climate change.
