The Faculty of Nursing, Chulalongkorn University, has officially launched the “Master of Nursing Science Program in Nurse Anesthesia” – the first of its kind in Thailand. The launch event was presided over by Professor Dr. Wilert Puriwat, President of Chulalongkorn University, with an opening report delivered by Professor Dr. Ratsiri Thato, Dean of the Faculty of Nursing. A special lecture titled “Advancements in the Nurse Anesthetist Profession” was given by Prof. Dr. Somchit Hanucharurnkul on September 23, 2025, on the 10th floor of Borommaratchachonnani Sisattaphat Building, Faculty of Nursing, Chulalongkorn University.
Nurse anesthetists are critical healthcare professionals responsible for administering anesthesia to patients undergoing surgery, complex diagnostic procedures, and other pain-inducing treatments. They assess both physical and psychological conditions of patients before anesthesia, develop appropriate care plans, select safe anesthesia methods, monitor vital signs continuously, and provide post-anesthesia care. The profession combines medical science and nursing expertise to prevent complications and ensure the highest standard of patient care.
Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Nursing has introduced Thailand’s first Master of Nursing Science in Nurse Anesthesia to enhance the expertise of nurse anesthetists in patient care, research, and the application of innovation—aiming to elevate the safety and quality of anesthesia care.

Program highlights:
Professor Dr. Wilert Puriwat, President of Chulalongkorn University, emphasized that curriculum development goes beyond academic qualifications—it’s about real-world application and innovation. With rapid advancements in health knowledge and technology, new programs must evolve to meet public health needs.
He praised the Faculty of Nursing for being the first in Thailand to launch a master’s degree program specifically for nurse anesthetists. This program is a pilot initiative, with more to follow, all designed to align with innovations and societal needs.
“In today’s fast-moving world, Chulalongkorn University aims not only to keep up with global changes but to lead them. Our goal is to ensure graduates are well-prepared for labor market demands and technological innovation.” – Prof. Dr. Wilert.
Professor Dr. Ratsiri Thato, Dean of the Faculty of Nursing, explained that nurse anesthetists are integral to both general and regional anesthesia. Due to a significant shortage of anesthesiologists—especially in rural areas—nurse anesthetists fill a critical gap.
There are currently about 4,000 nurse anesthetists nationwide. A survey conducted by Chulalongkorn University found that over 70% of approximately 3,000 respondents expressed interest in pursuing a master’s degree. Despite this demand, no master’s program in nurse anesthesia had been available until now—despite two decades of efforts.
Prompted by a formal request from the Nurse Anesthetist Association, the faculty took action to create this new program to enhance professional competency and career development.
The program stands out by offering only a research plan, with no coursework, allowing students to focus exclusively on thesis work. Since students already hold a foundational certificate in nurse anesthesia, the master’s program builds upon that with a research focus.
Students can complete the degree in as little as 1 to 1.5 years. Graduates will gain advanced capabilities, especially in research and innovation, leading to improved patient safety and quality of care throughout the surgical process.
“Graduates will be equipped to serve as expert nurse anesthetists, healthcare researchers, public health administrators, or academic faculty. They can also pursue doctoral studies to further drive innovation in nurse anesthesia.” – Prof. Dr. Ratsiri.
For the first academic year, the program will accept 15 students to ensure optimal learning outcomes.
