Asst. Prof. Dr. Rukchanok Karcharnubarn, Dean of the College of Population Studies, Chulalongkorn University, together with the College’s executives, welcomed Prof. William Axinn, Director of the International Research Hub, and Prof. Stephanie Chardoul, Director of Survey Research Operations and International Research, both senior administrators from the Institute for Social Research (ISR) at the University of Michigan, on the occasion of their visit to the College to discuss potential collaboration in demographic research and innovations in population data survey methods. The visit took place on November 17, 2025, at Room 301, Visid Prachuabmoh Building.
During the visit, Asst. Prof. Dr. Rukchanok Karcharnubarn, Dean of the College of Population Studies, delivered a briefing on the College’s research initiatives, such as the Chula-ARi Project, an interdisciplinary project implemented within Bangkok, and the Nan Cultural Ecosystem Strengthening Project for Sustainable Aging Societies, an interdisciplinary initiative aimed at preparing for an aging society. The latter is a collaboration between the College of Population Studies, the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, and the Center of Learning Network for the Region, Chulalongkorn University.
Afterwards, Prof. William Axinn and Prof. Stephanie Chardoul provided an overview of the significant role of ISR in global demographic and social science research, along with examples of research articles published in leading academic journals that have utilized ISR’s data.
The Institute for Social Research (ISR), University of Michigan, is the world’s largest academic survey and research organization in the fields of population and social sciences and a leader in developing and applying innovative research methodologies. Dedicated to empowering emerging researchers, ISR plays a vital role in driving research that improves the quality of life for people in the United States.
This joint meeting has paved the way for collaboration in demographic research and the development of innovations in population data collection, with the aim of enhancing research quality and strengthening the capacity of the college’s faculty members and researchers. Such collaboration will further reinforce the significant role of the College of Population Studies, Chulalongkorn University, in informing policies to improve population well-being in Thailand and globally, thereby elevating Chulalongkorn University’s presence in the field of global population studies.
