A Tribute to Jiří Menzel

Monday, 9 November 2020 – The Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Thailand, organized a screening of the Czech-language film Closely Watched Trains (1966), an Academy-Award Winning Best Foreign Language Film in 1968.  The event, Tribute to Jiří Menzel, was organized to celebrate the internationally acclaimed film director. 

Held at the Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Building, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University, the session started with welcoming remarks by Ajarn Kunnaya Wimooktanon, Ph.D., Director of BALAC, Chulalongkorn University, followed by an opening speech, “My Menzel Memories”, by Mr Aleš Vytečka, Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Bangkok.  Other speakers included Ajarn Katarzyna Ancuta, Ph.D., BALAC, on “An Overview of Jiří Menzel’s Works” and Associate Professor Varitta Sriratana, Ph.D., Department of English, on “Menzel’s Adaptation of Bohumil Hrabal”.  The event drew to a close with a post-screening discussion, which included panelists: Professor Katarzyna Ancuta, Ph.D., Mr., Chai Sakulchokchai (BALAC Program student), Mr. Chayanin Nuamphummarin (English Department Student), and Associate Professor Varitta Sriratana, Ph.D. (Moderator).

The sense of kinship and warmth found in the Chula community is priceless and a treasure worth keeping.
