Chulalongkorn University expresses sincere condolences for the death of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Her Majesty was an iconic leader who inspired and guided her country with great wisdom. In remembrance, the university recounts two historical visits to Chulalongkorn University by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II—in 1972 and 1996.
Queen Elizabeth II first visited Chulalongkorn University in 1972, when Her Majesty visited Thailand for the first time. The queen made a brief walkabout on campus, accompanied by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. The reception room of the Chulalongkorn University Auditorium was renovated in preparation for and in honor of the queen’s visit, and is still used for important ceremonies to this day.
Her Majesty the Queen’s second visit took place in October 1996 when she arrived in Thailand during the 50th anniversary (Golden Jubilee) celebration of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great’s accession to the throne. Her Majesty opened a new office of the British Council at Wittayakit Building and arrived at Chulalongkorn University Auditorium to meet students and members of the Chulalongkorn community. Her Majesty was greeted by students with a “Boom” song, a lively and spirited song of cheer.
