APEC 2022 Official Logo, the Thai Woven Basket ‘Chalom,’ Designed by Chula Sophomore Architecture Student Was Selected Through Competition

As host of APEC 2022, Thailand has vowed to prioritize inclusive and sustainable growth. The official logo of APEC 2022, a woven basket known as Chalom was selected from 600 entries from Thai youths. Our correspondent Dusita Saokaew reports.
Every year, it is the host country’s responsibility to come up with a theme.
Open. Connect. Balance. Thailand’s theme for APEC 2022. The next step was to create a logo. A logo that would be seen everywhere in this city. A logo that would reflect the core values of the theme and its host country.
ARWIN INTRUNGSI Head Judge APEC Logo Design Competition “We needed to show that Thailand is the host country, so the aspect of culture is important. But the most important aspect is needed to reflect the ideals of the APEC which is bringing countries together through trade, commerce and economy.”
2022 will perhaps be one of the most difficult years to host APEC for any member. But it also brings tremendous opportunity. A showcase of Thailand’s unique culture and creative talents.
Talents like, Chawanon Wongtrakuljong. A sophomore Architecture student at Chulalongkorn University, who submitted the winning design. The competition saw almost 600 entries from aspiring Thais under the age of 25. Chawanon devoted all his time and energy to what he deems as a “once in a lifetime opportunity.”
CHAWANON WONGTRAKULJONG Winner APEC Logo Design Competition “I wanted to design something unique that strongly reflected the theme. I ended up with the Chalom. The interlaced bamboo strips are woven together to form 21 openings, signifying the 21 member economies. It’s such a great feeling that I won the competition and my logo is now seen around the world.”
