Chula Proposes “Stop Violence in Schools” Research Plans

The 1st Teacher Conference on the theme of “Stop Violence in Schools,” a collaboration between Chulalongkorn University and Globish Academia (Thailand) English Language Institute, Chulalongkorn University Innovation Center’s start-up business in education, was held on April 26, 2023 at the Social Innovation Hub, Wisit Prachuabmoh Building, Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn University, under the International Friends for Peace 2023 project, with the aim of solving and ending violence in schools and educational institutions.

Assoc. Prof. Dr.Sumonthip Chitsawang, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn University, head of the Thai Society without Violenceresearch project, funded by the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT), gave a talk on the topic of “Challenging Thailand Research Plans: Thai Society without Violence,” which seeks solutions to the problem of violence in Thai society by studying the causes and the effects of violence, as well as the models for violence prevention and solution.

In a global situation, violence in Thai society can be divided into 3 types:

  1. violence against oneself
  2. interpersonal violence
  3. violence between groups

This information will contribute to research on finding a model approach to prevent and solve the problem of and tools to prevent and mitigate violence in Thai society.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sumonthip stressed the importance of cooperation between various organizations, including government agencies, such as the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS), the Royal Thai Police, local government organizations, Ministry of Public Health, or Ministry of Justice, as well as civil society, the media, the private sector, and the family, which are among the most significant and can contribute to violence.

“From the research in the second year, the Road Map to No Violence in Thai Society has been developed in 5 components:

  1. Policy
  2. Prevention
  3. Protection
  4. Prosecution
  5. Partnership

The research has been ongoing to pass on the knowledge to various agencies, leading to further tangible care and prevention of violence,” Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sumonthip concluded.

The event also features talks on other interesting topics as follows:

  • “Human Rights Regarding Youth in Education Institutions” by Mr. Sappasit Kumpraphan, expert in children’s rights and consultant to the Department of Children and Youth
  • Human Rights and Creative Media by Ms. Sruangmon Sidhisamarn, consultant to the National Human Rights Commission
  • How to Handle the Media When Unexpected Events Occur in Schools? by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Preeda Akarachantachote, Dean of the Faculty of Communication Arts, Chulalongkorn University

The Teacher Conference will take place on two more occasions: May 25 on the topic of preventative measures and training in laws and psychology, and June 22 on the topic of art therapy.
