Resounding applause to Chula first-year students from the Faculty of Architecture for recently receiving an award from the ‘Circular Design Contest’ project.
The project serves as a platform for these students, allowing them to tackle real-world industrial challenges by transforming waste rebar materials into valuable, usable items with strong commercial potential within the circular economy.
As part of the ‘Architectural Structural Mechanics’ course, this project is organized by Asst. Prof. Dr. Lapyote Prasittisopin, in collaboration with Tata Steel (Thailand) Public Company Limited and CU D4S. The contest features two categories: small works (weighing under 10 kilograms per piece) and large works (weighing 10 kilograms or more per piece).
The judging committee, consisting of Asst. Prof. Dr. Lapyote Prasitsophin and Asst. Prof. Dr. Shusak Janpathompong from Chula’s Faculty of Architecture, assessed the structural design’s feasibility. Representatives from Tata Steel (Thailand) Public Company Limited, namely Mr. Piyawit Methaluk, Mr. Wuttinunt Attaparp, and Mr. Anuwat Rongngern, evaluated the aesthetic aspects of rebar materials and the industry’s interest in further development. Dr. Tatsawan Preedawiphat, a representative from CU D4S, explored the potential for establishing a business in the circular economy system. Additionally, students in the course and project participants voted in the Popular Vote award, offering the greatest reward value.
Among the 74 entries submitted to the contest, the winning pieces are as follows:
