Chulalongkorn University, in collaboration with Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore, organized the CU x NTU Overseas Community Engagement Project 2024 from December 12-23, 2024, at The Center of Learning Network for the Region (CLNR) in Nan. The goal of the event was to repair check dams and promote learning in water management at high altitudes for students from both institutions. The project also allowed students to study a community business model from local community enterprises and businesses to run the Mini Hackathon activity for the purpose of sustainable community development.
CU x NTU Overseas Community Engagement Project 2024 was organized by Chulalongkorn University’s Office of Student Affairs in collaboration with The Center of Learning Network for the Region and School of Agricultural Resources. The project emphasizes integrating academic knowledge with practical application as well as developing teamwork skills, problem-solving abilities, and critical thinking. It also establishes collaborative networks between Chulalongkorn University, world-leading educational institutions, and communities to accomplish sustainable development goals (SDGs 17), serving as a model and inspiration for students to recognize their role in social development.
Project activities included hands-on work repairing check dams in community forest areas, with equipment and staff support from CLNR, practical lectures on water management and agricultural challenges in Nan delivered by the School of Agricultural Resources and local speakers and village experts; and lectures on the importance of check dams for communities and other organisms in the ecosystem from CLNR. The project also featured visits to the Ban Nam Kian Community Enterprise and local private businesses such as Ban Tai Lue Coffee Shop and Hueun Hang Tor Coffee Shop. The purpose was to allow students to gather data for the Mini Hackathon activity where they had to brainstorm ways to sustainably develop Nan province. The target SDGs for this activity included 1 (No Poverty), 2 (Zero Hunger), and 15 (Life on Land). Asst. Prof. Dr. Narapong Srivisal, Assistant to the President for Student Affairs, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Noppadon Kitana, Director of the Center of Learning Network for the Region, Chulalongkorn University, were the judges of the competition. This project reflects the university’s emphasis on nurturing Global Citizens with an awareness of local communities.
