The event was presided over by Professor Dr. Wilert Puriwat, President of Chulalongkorn University, who delivered the opening remarks. Professor Dr. Nuttha Thongchul, Director of the Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, presented the event’s objectives.

On this occasion, President Wilert also participated in the activity “Taste and Chat with the President”, where he shared his impressions after sampling premium Thai mushroom dishes. Mushrooms, a long-familiar ingredient in Thai cuisine, have been elevated through scientific and technological knowledge into high-value health menus, exemplifying the harmony of science and art in enhancing quality of life.

The program also featured keynote talks by distinguished speakers, including:

  • “Innovative Approaches to Screening in the Age of Preventive Healthcare” by Aswin Techajareonvikul, CEO and President of BJC Big C Group
  • “SA1 and Translating Research into Added Value for Thai Agricultural Products” by Dr. Janekrishna Kanatharana, Deputy Managing Director, Federation of Thai Industries

Participants then enjoyed an engaging activity, “Three Words”, which invited attendees to sample Thai mushroom dishes under the concept “From Taxonomy to Gastronomy” and share their impressions of the fusion of flavors, art, and Thai culinary culture.

The event concluded with a panel discussion on “From Taxonomy to Gastronomy” featuring:

  • Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rittirong Jiwakanon, Director of the Institute of Thai Studies, Chulalongkorn University
  • Dr. Niphatchanok Najpinij, Culinary Culture Expert, Suan Dusit University
  • Santi Abakaz, CEO & Co-Founder, Tastebud Lab & Bio Buddy
  • Dr. Thitiya Boonpratuang, President of the Mushroom Research and Cultivation Society of Thailand

The “Research Masterpiece: Life with Biotech” event is part of the Research Masterpiece series by nine research institutes of Chulalongkorn University, in collaboration with internal and external partners, aiming to communicate impactful research findings.

This event highlighted the role of biotechnology and food innovation in improving the quality of life under the concept “Food as Medicine.” It showcased the synergy of science, technology, and culture in creating high-value mushroom-based health products, presented through delicately crafted dishes that also point toward the future of food consumption.

The sense of kinship and warmth found in the Chula community is priceless and a treasure worth keeping.
