Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Veterinary Science, represented by Professor Dr. Sanipa Suradhat, Dean of the Faculty, has received a mobile blood donation vehicle (Mobile Blood Bank) from Dr. Thanan Leelayuwa, an executive member of the Intelnovation Group and his family. The vehicle will be used to further academic work in veterinary hematology and to enhance the efficiency of care for sick pets.
The presentation took place on September 5, 2025, at the Veterinary Diagnostic Building, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University. Also in attendance were Assistant Professor Dr. Chaiyot Tanrattana, Director of the Small Animal Hospital, Dr. Suwarat Wadeerat, Head of the Blood Bank and Hematology Clinic, and other faculty administrators. Distinguished guests included Boyd Kosiyabong, Arnop Chirakiti, Kirrawee Lertsuriyabhak, and Komol Chearavanont, who joined the event and participated in a panel discussion about the origins of the CU Blood Bank Project.
Dr. Suwarat Wadeerat explained that for the past 14 years and more, the Pet Blood Bank at Chulalongkorn University has been in operation, with goals to conduct research in veterinary hematology, produce and develop specific blood products for treatment, transfer knowledge to veterinarians, and build a network of pet owners who voluntarily donate blood on a regular basis.
All donated blood goes through component separation into different types, which increases the effective use of the limited supply. In the future, the results of research and development into canine-derived albumin will be used to create Canine Albumin, which is expected to be a world-first innovation in pet treatment.
The use of blood products also requires compatibility testing. Pet owners can either bring blood samples or bring their pets directly to the Faculty of Veterinary Science for testing. Dogs, for instance, have a complex blood group system with at least eight types, so precise testing is necessary for both safety and effectiveness in treatment.
In addition to blood product research, the Pet Blood Bank also aims to develop a comprehensive laboratory for full-spectrum blood analysis and testing. It also plans to pursue stem cell research in veterinary medicine to generate new treatment knowledge and expand healthcare options for animals in the future.
The mobile blood donation vehicle has been designed and modified to serve as a mobile laboratory, capable of traveling to various areas within Bangkok and surrounding provinces to collect blood donations from pets. Donor animals undergo a basic health check before every donation to ensure blood quality and safety. The Blood Bank expects to collect more than 1,000 bags of blood per year, and once separated into components, this could multiply the number of animals helped several times over.
Dr. Thanan Leelayuwa of the Intelnovation Group expressed his pride in contributing to the advancement of academic knowledge and research, as well as in helping save the lives of pets in need of blood through the Mission4P Project, a corporate social responsibility initiative continuously supported by his family and company. Past initiatives have included diverse social projects in healthcare and education, such as producing liquid hand sanitizers for hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic and donating medical equipment, as well as supporting research-oriented projects like a model coffee processing plant for university use.
The donation of the mobile pet blood donation vehicle represents a significant step in collaboration between the private sector and academic institutions. It will help elevate the quality of pet healthcare, enhance academic knowledge, and contribute to sustainable animal healthcare development in Thailand.
