Exploring the Soul of Art Education — “Aestora” Exhibition Opens at Chulalongkorn University

The Faculty of Education, Chulalongkorn University, opens an academic and creative space through the exhibition “Aestora: Philosophy and Journey of Art Education,” held at the Suman Amornwiwat Room, Faculty of Education, from now until November 4, 2025, 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. The opening ceremony, held on October 28, was presided over by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yotsawee Saifah, Dean of the Faculty of Education, Chulalongkorn University.

The exhibition “Aestora: Philosophy and Journey of Art Education” explores the development, concepts, and philosophical foundations of art education from past to present. It highlights the transformation of thinking, theories, and the roles of art education in modern learning societies. The exhibition showcases learning media created by students from recycled paper, as well as digital and virtual components, including a 360-degree virtual exhibition website that allows visitors to access knowledge both on-site and online.

This exhibition is a collaboration between third-year undergraduate students from the Art Education and Educational Technology programs, as well as first-year master’s students in Art Education. The goal is to integrate knowledge from art and educational technology to develop new approaches to communicating art education content—making it more accessible, interpretable, and connected to the 21st-century learning society that values interaction, creativity, and experiential learning.

Thodsapron Uanjee, a third-year Art Education student and head of content development, explained that this is the first public exhibition within the Faculty of Education to present the history and philosophy of art education—both Thai and international. The process involved studying the origins and theories of art education from various eras, from early craft-based education to perceptual art, identity formation, and socially transformative art education. Condensing and synthesizing these ideas into accessible forms was a major challenge, leading the team to use interactive media such as pop-up books, board games, and paper models to allow visitors to interpret and construct meaning on their own.

“Recycled paper was the main material used to create media for this exhibition. It is accessible, inexpensive, versatile, and—most importantly—aligned with the concept of sustainability. Reusing paper to create new educational media adds new value and shows that artistic knowledge is not limited to valuable materials but can emerge from the imagination and interpretive processes of both creators and audiences,” said Thodsapron.

He added that the exhibition project took 2–3 months to develop, beginning with research, audience experience design, media production, and adaptation for both physical and virtual spaces. With a team of over 60 members, students gained hands-on learning experiences in academic knowledge and practical skills such as time management, team communication, problem-solving, and cohesive presentation design.

Koranan Temboonkird, a third-year Educational Technology student and head of presentation technology, said that the virtual exhibition website was designed to expand access to art education knowledge and respond to digital-age learning styles. The website, titled “Visual Aura: Where Art Meets Education Immersion,” allows visitors to explore art education timelines, examine 3D models of the physical exhibits, and experience a 360-degree panoramic virtual tour of the exhibition space—enabling anyone to learn anywhere, anytime. The creation of this site was a close collaboration between the two disciplines: Art Education students synthesized theoretical content, while Educational Technology students developed engaging and interactive presentation formats. “Technology doesn’t replace art—it serves as a bridge that connects people to art in ways that fit contemporary lifestyles,” Koranan explained.

She added that the “Aestora” exhibition also aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • SDG 4 – Quality Education, reflected in inclusive learning design that makes art education accessible to all;
  • SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, demonstrated through the use of digital technology to expand learning opportunities;
  • SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities, shown through the creative reuse of waste materials; and
  • SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals, realized through collaboration among students from various disciplines and expert faculty advisors, including Prof. Dr. Jintavee Khlaisang, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Prakob Koraneekij, guest lecturer Mr. Pawarit Pingmuang, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kantapon Sangwanchai, who supervised the course framework that guided this experiential learning project.

“The exhibition welcomes all visitors, with student guides taking turns to provide in-depth explanations of the content and meanings behind each piece. This exhibition demonstrates that art education is not only about learning art—it is about learning to understand humanity, experience, and the creation of meaning for life and society,” Koranan concluded.

The sense of kinship and warmth found in the Chula community is priceless and a treasure worth keeping.
