Chulalongkorn University welcomes member institutions from The Association of Southeast Asian Institution of Higher Learning to the “ASAIHL Online World Congress 2020”, a virtual conference organised by ASAIHL Thailand and the Council of University Presidents of Thailand. Under this year’s theme, “COVID-19: The Global New Reality”, stakeholders and experts from various fields shared insights on the adverse impact of the pandemic and methods to implement the new normal lifestyle. Professor Bundhit Eua-Arporn, President of Chulalongkorn University cordially welcomed the participants during the opening remarks of the virtual conference.
The conference was an opportunity for Chulalongkorn University to present successful and ongoing developments, such as research on the COVID-19 vaccine by the Chula Vaccine Research Center, the Chula Baiya Strip Test, the RoboCOVID robots, the Shield+ Protecting Spray, and other technological innovations.
Professor Kiat Ruxrungtham, Chair of the Chula Vaccine Research Center and Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, attended the virtual meeting as one of the panel speakers for the Medical & Health Science Forum. He revealed the progress of the COVID-19 vaccine and shared the centre’s move to use mRNA technology, due to satisfactory results in boosting the immunity system, as experimented in rats. The official vaccine trails have started in monkeys and initial results are expected to come out by the end of June.
Professor Kiat Ruxrungtham also mentioned the ongoing development on vaccines and medicine by the Chula Vaccine Research Center and the commitment to build a strong foundation for vaccines and medicine by Thai people, and for Thai people. With years of research and development, the centre functions under the principle that Thailand should not only be on the receiving end of development, but should also be a part of the medical treatment innovation. The Chula Vaccine Research Center is considered to be the first in the country with the most developed COVID-19 vaccine, in a collaborative effort with the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, the University of Pennsylvania (U.S.A.), the National Vaccine Institute, the National Research Council of Thailand, and other partner organisations.
Dr. Puttimol Sribonfa, CEO and co-founder of Nabsolute Company, a startup from the CU Innovation Hub and developer of the Shield + Protecting Spray for fabric masks, shared that she is excited to be a part of CU researches that benefits the community. “As a startup company, it has been easier to streamline the operation and create efficient innovations to help alleviate social problems. Furthermore, the company has provided CU students with the opportunity to learn through the execution and implementation of their knowledge, while being ingrained with the sense of social responsibility”, added Dr. Puttimol.
