Department of English, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University, cordially invites you to attend a public lecture on the topic of “Between three districts whence the smoke arose…”: T.S. Eliot, Poetry and Cosmopolitanism. The event will be held on Wednesday 14 February 2018, from 13.00 – 15.00. in room.707, Boromrachakumari Building, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University.
Abstract
Few poets raise the questions of identity and belonging more critically than T.S. Eliot. American by birth, he was British by adoption. Unitarian by upbringing, he became an Anglican by conversion. Deeply read in English verse, he was also steeped in the traditions of Latin, Greek, German, Sanskrit and Pali literature. Eliot was as happy writing in French as in English, and his spiritual affinities, though rooted latterly in English soil, embraced the religions of Buddhism, Hinduism, Celtic and Norse. In the month of the publication of his latest book, Literature, Music and Cosmopolitanism: Culture As Migration (Palgrave Macmillan 2018), Robert Fraser examines the relevance and irrelevance of notions of “place” to an understanding of Eliot’s poetry, and modern and postmodern literature generally.
Registration (for the lecture) is available online via http://bit.ly/2n12CA2 Walk-in registration is also available and free of charge. For more information, please contact Assistant Professor Verita Sriratana, Ph.D., at verita.s@chula.ac.th .
