The Tokyo Shimbun & The Chunichi Shimbun - Microplastics Found Inside Coral Skeletons

Microplastics Found Inside Coral Skeletons

A research team from Kyushu University and Thailand’s Chulalongkorn University has announced the first detection of microplastics inside the skeletons of corals in the waters surrounding Thailand. Once microplastics are incorporated into the coral skeletons, they could potentially remain in the environment for thousands of years, raising serious concerns. Addressing plastic waste has become a critical international issue, with an intergovernmental negotiation committee meeting set to begin on the 25th in Busan, South Korea, to draft a treaty.

Approximately 80% of plastic waste is believed to flow into marine areas, where it deteriorates and fragments over time, forming microplastics—tiny plastic particles less than 5 millimeters in diameter. According to the recent findings, the proportion of microplastics consumed by corals and integrated into their skeletons depends on their eventual location. The research team also reported that waste discarded in Southeast Asia drifts across the Gulf of Thailand, where microplastics have been detected in the skeletons of corals. Partner organizations include JICA and other collaborators.

Chula’s encouragement and support for research is excellent for teachers, students, and the public.
