Chula Signs Joint Agreement to Share Research and Innovation on Prosthesis and Orthosis for Amputees

On July 4, 2019, the Ministry of Public Health, National Research council of Thailand, Mahidol University and Chulalongkorn University, represented by Professor Yingyos Avihingsanon, assistant to the President for Research, Development and Innovation (Health Sciences and Technology), signed a joint agreement for the project “A New Step with Research and Innovation“. The project, created to celebrate the royal coronation ceremony, includes an agreement to share research and innovation for useful purposes. To start, high-quality prosthetic legs and orthotic ankles will be provided to amputees without charge, allowing people with a disability better access to innovations that enhance the quality of life.

In light of the event, the Center of Excellence for Prosthetic and Orthopedic Implant, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Chulalongkorn University, presented the Dynamic Ankle-Foot Orthosis (S-Pace). The invention is made of carbon fibre, which is strong but light, and can be produced in Thailand. It has also passed the strength test from the Sirindhorn National Medical Rehabilitation Institute (SNMRI), according to ISO 10328 standard.

Moreover, the Sirindhorn School of Prosthetics and Orthotics, Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital, presented the Low Cost Local Made Silicone Liner, which can be produced in Thailand and is similar in quality to the ones imported from abroad.

Chula’s encouragement and support for research is excellent for teachers, students, and the public.
