According to the QS World University Rankings 2018 released on 28 February 2018, Chulalongkorn University was ranked as the top university in Thailand and listed in the top 50 Universities in Asia. The University has been named top in the country for five consecutive years and its overall world ranking has jumped from last year’s 252nd to 245th this year.
Six key indicators were used in the rankings, including Academic reputation (40%), Employer reputation (10%), Faculty/Student Ratio (20%), Citations per faculty (20%), and International faculty ratio/International student ratio (5% each).
Other Thai universities noted in the QS ranking included Mahidol University at 334th, Chiang Mai University at 551st-600th, Kasetsart University at 751st-800th, and King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi and Khon Kaen University at 801st –1,000th.
By region, Chulalongkorn University was listed as the top university in Thailand for two years in a row (2017-2018) and placed as one of the top 50 universities in Asia. Other Thai universities included in this ranking are Mahidol University at 58th, Thammasat University at 97th, Chiang Mai University at 112th, Kasetsart University at 149th, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi at 171st, Khon Kaen University at 178th, and Prince of Songkla University at 188th.
For the world, the leading university was Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), followed by Stanford University and Harvard University. Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University and National University of Singapore took the top two best universities in Asia, listed 11th and 15th in the world, while Tsinghua University in China came in as the third best university in Asia and ranked 25th in the world.
From the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2018, Chulalongkorn University made the best 150 university list for two subjects, Engineering & Technology and Social Sciences & Management. Arts & Humanities came in the top 200, whereas Life Sciences & Medicine and Natural Sciences made the top 250 and 300, respectively.
Broken down by subjects, Chulalongkorn University ranked higher in three areas, including Social Sciences and Management, Engineering and Technology, and Arts and Humanities.
Meanwhile, a few CU subjects have dropped in their rankings. For instance, Biological Sciences dropped from 203rddown to 215th and Natural Sciences, from 256th down to 266th.

World Rank 101 – 200 includes: Accounting & Finance, Architecture & Built Environment, Environmental Sciences, Geography, Modern Languages, Pharmacy & Pharmacology, Politics & International Studies, Business & Management Studies, Chemistry, Engineering: Civil & Structural, Engineering: Electrical & Electronic, Engineering: Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing, Linguistics, Materials Science, Medicine, and Sociology.
World Rank 201 – 350 includes: Economics & Econometrics, Biological Sciences, Computer Science & Information System, and Physics & Astronomy.
