Overview

The Faculty of Allied Health Sciences at Chulalongkorn University fully recognizes the great demand for the bachelor’s degree curriculum in nutrition and dietetics in Thailand. Now, the faculty offers an intensive Ph.D. degree program in food and nutrition for professionals and scientists. It is the first graduate program in food and nutrition taught entirely in English in Thailand.

The Ph.D. scientific program offers opportunities to deepen knowledge and understanding of the food and nutrition field through research in three fields of study: 

  • Medical Nutrition Therapy
  • Nutritional Biochemistry
  • Applied Food and Nutrition

Our curriculum focuses on producing graduates who are knowledgeable in integrated nutritional sciences with an application of modern technology in the scientific analysis and research to apply the know-how in everyday life as well as promote accurate knowledge in food and nutrition to benefit the society and the country as a whole. Our graduates are also taught morals and ethics in conducting themselves as conscientious professionals.

The research interests of our graduate faculty encompass many different aspects of nutrition including experimental, clinical, health, human, animal models, and food development.

Graduates of Food and Nutrition will be qualified to work as clinical nutritionists, nutrition counselors, directors of food and nutrition, nutrition and family health coordinators, product specialist, research scientist, and more. Outstanding Networking, Study Abroad and Exchange Programs

From 2018, a new BALAC curriculum has expanded and diversified, putting stronger focus on practical education. Realizing that students need more than just knowledge for their success, the new curriculum offers students with learning opportunities and experiences to get an edge in today’s global workplace. Two new concentrations: Global Cultures and Media Cultures, are now available for students besides Foreign Language.  Students have a wider range of courses to take, including independent study courses. Upper level students can also do an internship at a business or an organization for credit and focus on a capstone Senior Project.

Earn a Double Degrees

Also, to provide opportunities for fostering meaningful relationships and networking, as well as broadening of experience for our students, we offer a Student Exchange Program and Overseas Study Trips. Career Opportunities

Upon completion of the Ph.D. degree in food and nutrition, graduates will be qualified to work as clinical nutritionists, nutrition counselors, directors of food and nutrition, nutrition and family health coordinators, product specialist, research scientist and more.

Admission

Total credits:

  • Track 1.1 and Track 2.1 – 48 credits
  • Track 1.2 and Track 2.2 – 72 credits

Qualifications of Applicants

For master’s degree holders – Study track 1.1:

  1. Hold a master’s degree or equivalent in the fields that have foundation courses in health science and biology from the educational institutions accredited by the Office of the Civil Service Commission and the Program Committee considers applicants to be eligible for admission.  Applicants should have academic publication(s) and have at least 2 years of work experience;
  2. Meet Chula’s English Proficiency requirements;
  3. Other qualifications according to the Graduate School’s annual announcement or those deemed eligible for admission by the Program Administrative Committee.

For master’s degree holders – Study track 1.2:

  1. Hold a master’s degree with 1st Honor or equivalent in the fields that have foundation courses in health science and biology from the educational institutions accredited by the Office of the Civil Service Commission and the Program Committee considers applicants to be eligible for admission.  Applicants should have at least 2 academic publications and have at least 5 years of work experience;
  2. Meet Chula’s English Proficiency requirements;
  3. Other qualifications according to the Graduate School’s annual announcement or those deemed eligible for admission by the Program Administrative Committee.

For master’s degree holders – Study track 2.1:

  1. Hold a master’s degree or equivalent in the fields that have foundation courses in health science and biology from the educational institutions accredited by the Office of the Civil Service Commission and the Program Committee consider applicants to be eligible for admission;
  2. Meet Chula’s English Proficiency requirements;
  3. Other qualifications according to the Graduate School’s annual announcement or those deemed eligible for admission by the Program Administrative Committee.

For master’s degree holders – Study track 2.2:

  1. Hold a master’s degree with at least 2nd Honor or equivalent in the fields that have foundation courses in health science and biology from the educational institutions accredited by the Office of the Civil Service Commission and the Program Committee consider applicants to be eligible for admission;
  2. Meet Chula’s English Proficiency requirements;
  3. Other qualifications according to the Graduate School’s annual announcement or those deemed eligible for admission by the Program Administrative Committee.

Duration of Program

For master’s degree holders: 3 academic years (maximum 6 academic years) and for bachelor’s degree holders: 4 academic years (maximum 8 academic years) starting from the first semester of enrollment.

Application Procedure:

Application for new students usually takes place in November (first round) and March (second round).  Please contact the program office for specific dates. For Thais, applicants can apply online at the Chulalongkorn Graduate Admission website. A non-refundable application fee of 500 THB is required. 

Please note that applications will be rejected if the required scores are not reported in our online system on the application date.  Therefore, please make sure your scores are reported in our online system before starting your application.

STEP 1: Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must 
  1. Hold a master’s degree or equivalent in the fields that have foundation courses in health science and biology with a minimum GPA of 3.25 (4-point system) or their thesis is of acceptable value;
  2. Meet English Proficient Scores: at least 525 on TOEFL, or at least 5.5 on IELTS.  Those who have not obtained these scores can use CU-TEP score of at least 67 to qualify;
  3. Other qualifications according to the Graduate School’s annual announcement or those deemed eligible for admission by the Program Administrative Committee.

Academic Calendar Year

The Food and Nutrition program is run on a semester basis: the first semester from August – December; and the second semester from January – May.
